System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 496.49

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.0, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-08 18:16, hash: c77597cd0e
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When using the navigation setting Orbit Around Selection and Auto Depth, rolling the viewport always use the last selection as the pivot point, even when nothing is selected.

The expected behavior should be the same as having the orbit around selection disabled, when nothing is selected the rolling should pivot around the center of the screen.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Activate orbit around selection and auto depth in the navigation preferences
  2. Bind view3d.view_roll in the keymap using roll angle
    blender_roll_bind.png
  3. Select an object and roll the viewport
  4. De-select the object and roll the viewport again, the pivot remains in the same place

According to the documentation, this is the expected behavior. https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/editors/preferences/navigation.html

When there is no selection the last selection will be used.

So the issue reported here is a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior. Closing as this bug tracker is only for bugs and errors.

For user requests and feedback, please use other channels: https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Communication/Contact#User_Feedback_and_Requests

@OmarEmaraDev : note though that this is working for view rotation (Orbit Around Selection ON, Auto Depth ON, no selection -> depth under the mouse will be used)

@lichtwerk I am not entirely sure what you mean. If you know more about this, feel free to triage this as appropriate.

@OmarEmaraDev : you can see this is the first half of the example video: viewport rotation is around the origin of the selected cube (if one is selected) and around whatever is under the mouse (if nothing is selected).
This is not true for viewport roll (here, it is always around the origin of selection (either current or last selection).

I agree this is not really a bug (but I think this is a nice addition and would make this more consistent with other behavior in blender).
Will put on my desk as TODO.

note: since 69893ef27c using the dial is a bit awkward to use in case of Orbit Around Selection or Auto Depth since it always has its dial center initialized in the region center. This should use the selection origin (or in case of Auto Depth something near the mouse).
