System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro RTX 5000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 472.84

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-12-02 18:35, hash: f1cca30557
Worked: Version 2.93 (this is the newest version I know of where it worked)

Short description of error
Up until Version 2.93, when you set up an AOV Pass in Cycles for certain objects, the output would give a transparent background for everything that does not possess the corresponding AOV node, which is very handy when it comes to compositing exchangeable graphics onto the rendering. However, since version 3.0.0, the background is no longer transparent, but gets filled with a solid black color instead, which makes it - out of the box - impossible for most compositing tasks. Since there is no benefit for the AOV to not have a transparent background as opposed to having one, I consider this as an error.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open a new file in Blender 3.0.0 or above.
  • Set the engine to Cycles
  • Open the shader editor and create a new AOV node inside the default cube's material. Name it "AOV" and leave the color at black.
  • Create a new AOV output in the View Layer Properties and name it "AOV"
  • Render the scene.
  • When you view the AOV pass, you'll see a solid black image.

If these steps are repeated in Blender 2.93 or lower, the result should be a black mask for the default cube with a transparent background.
