Image sequence as texture for particles density refresh issue #97303

Operating system: MacOS Moterey 12.3
Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 515 1536 MB

Blender Version
Broken: 3.1.0 (Release) c77597cd0e master

I had to re-create this issue because I misses updates on the issue i had submitted: https://developer.blender.org/T96523

When I use an animated Image Sequence as Texture for Particle Density the particles don't behave right, when I click "Refresh" on the Texture in one frame particles are being created but when I go frame by frame (or bake) no particles are being generated. I recreated this problem with a wave texture, black and white for good visibility of the problem.

When I go frame by frame and click "refresh" in the texture panel the particles are being updated. There's no update happening on play or bake.

The file "refresh_issue.blend" shows what's going on, the other blend file was used to render the images. Bugreport_particle_texture.zip

Animating density is a limitation of the current/old particle system.
This dates back to #28212 (Bad update on sequence texture for particles) and has always been a TODO on the old system #55362 (Blender development todo list -- Tools (migrated from wiki))

New Geometry Nodes / Particle Nodes will handle this at some point.

note: sometimes you can get away using Length instead (depending on your usecase).

So thx for the report, but will have to close since this is a Known Issue that is not going to get fixed in the current system.
