Vertex weight visualization and selection possible issues #97965

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17763-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 512.59

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-05-06 21:48, hash: 98a04ed452
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Hi, playing with vertex weight proximity as I needed this functionality to select specific vertices on an heavy mesh I found this possible issue:

The select similar function, doesn't not produce the expected result, and seems to operate only vertices with weight of 1 (less or greater function doesn't change the selection).

Another thing, when sampling the result of the VertexWeightProximity modifier, the result is wrong until the modifier is applied, in Weight painting mode.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
[Please describe the exact steps needed to reproduce the issue]
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

In the attached scene try the 'select similar' function, there is also a weightproximity modifier applied

What happens when you select by similar? Only the lower half of the sphere is selected (The ones with weight 1) but you expect all vertices to be selected? If so, I can't replicate that, all vertices are selected in my case.

In Weight Painting mode, the result of the modifier is only viewed, you can't use the painting tools on it until it is applied, so I think that is expected, you will be basically operating on the base weights in the group before the modifier application.

If I do Select Similar on a vertex with a weight different from 1 all the vertex are selected, if I do the same operation on a vertex with weight 1 only the vertex with weighting 1 are selected.

I can't replicate that. This is what I get. If I understand correctly, for you, only the red vertices are selected in the second operation?

yes absolutely, but it doesn't work any more for me to. The problem remains why the selection by similar (or less or greater) weight doesn't work? furthermore in the vertex group tab, using the weight slider combined with the select button give no result too, is this normal? I do not see any mean to select vertex by its weight.

I think I understand the problem.

The intention of @PMA33 is that all vertices with similar weight regardless of the group were selected.

But Select Similar Vertex Groups, does not work with Vertex Weights, it only works by selecting vertices in the same Vertex Group (See bpy-ops-mesh-select-similar ).

It would be nice to have an option to select similar vertex weights. But that would be a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior.

So closing as this bug tracker is only for bugs and errors.
