Crash while rendering image textures on Cycles using the AMD Radeon RX 6600m graphics card #97997

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22000-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6600M ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.14800 Core Profile Context 22.4.2 30.0.15021.7000

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2022-05-07 04:41, hash: 2a2261d7e1

Short description of error
Blender suddenly crashes when trying to render an image texture (either actual render or viewport) using Cycles. The problem is only present when using the GPU to render, CPU works as expected. The problem is only present when using Cycles, Eevee and ProRender work as expected. The problem persists through all combinations of Blender 3.0, Blender 3.1, and Blender 3.3 Alpha with the latest "recommended" drivers for the card I'm using (Adrenalin 22.3.1) as well as the latest "optional" drivers (Adrenalin 22.4.2)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Start a clean default project
  • Go into shading
  • On the material node, click Add > Texture > Image Texture
  • Send the "Color" output of the Image Texture into the "Base Color" input of the Principled BSDF (The error happens whether or not the Image Texture is empty)
  • Go into Render Properties and set the Render Engine to Cycles and the Device to GPU
  • Click F12

Please excuse me if I'm missing the obvious as I'm new to blender and 3D in general, but as I have not been able to find any info. about this specific problem online, I'm afraid I may actually be facing a bug. Thank you very much for your time.

Can you attach the crash report written by Blender when it crashes? https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/troubleshooting/crash.html

Hey everyone, thank you very much. Here are the crash reports and some debug logs just in case they may be of use.

Please tell me if I can do anything else.

@Xenevis It seems the crash happens in the AMD driver. Can you try the Pro driver instead of the Adrenalin one? Radeon Pro 21.Q4 seems to be the latest one.

I have tried to run the Pro drivers, however, Blender would fire an OpenGL 3.3 error when I tried to run the program using them (I cannot, however, recall which version I was running, most likely 3.1)

I may be tremendously wrong here, but may this be related to the fact that the Pro drivers support only the dedicated graphics and not the integrated AMD Radeon Graphics? Since the 6600m is a mobile card it may be dependant on operating together with the integrated graphics?

Is it possible to run the Pro drivers for the dedicated graphics and Adrenalin for the integrated ones or some similar workaround to see what happens? I can move to the Pro drivers to offer some kind of log or report you would indicate me if doing so may help.

As I am not really familiar with the platform and don't have the hardware, I will leave this for someone else to look into.

Cannot confirm this with latest master, it renders fine with the GPU.

Also reported on Linux with AMD 5700XT in #97591.

@Xenevis Could you set the variable AMD_LOG_LEVEL=3 and run blender? This should print out the API trace from HIP, can you paste that?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by that and trying to figure out by myself just got me even more confused ^^U, could you please give me some more detailed instructions?

Of course, np. I was unable to reproduce the issue on a 6800xt. So the api trace from your machine could be helpful. You can add the following to environment variables to the system.

  1. AMD_LOG_LEVEL_FILE=C:\amdlog.txt (or whichever path you choose)
  2. AMD_LOG_LEVEL=3
  3. Run blender, after the crash check the C:\amdlog.txt file and attach it here.

Thank you very much, here is the resulting file (runing the Adrenalin 22.3.1 drivers and Blender 3.3 Alpha)

Here's also logs from Arch Linux and ROCm 5.1.2 (error is same with older versions as well).

Hi,

i had the same bug with my AMD 6800M on the ASUS ROG STRIX G513QY with Windows 10 x64

the crash occurred only in Cycles in different scenarios:

  • Load an image with the "Image Texture" node
  • Load a HDRI with the "Environment Texture" node or Use a Blender embedded HDRI texture
  • Use the "Nishita" model with the "Sky Texture" node (the others models worked)

i tried with Blender 3.1.2, and the daily build Blender 3.3.0 (2022-05-07)

with the AMD adrenaline driver version 22.5.1 WHQL

i tried to use the Radeon Pro 21.Q4 but the driver seems incompatible with the AMD 6000 Mobile GPUs

But today i tried to upgrade the driver to the "AMD Software Preview Driver May 2022" version 22.10.01.03, and the bug seems fixed in both Blender versions

Thanks for sharing @liquirizia!

I have upgraded to the AMD Software Preview Driver May 2022 and it solves the problem for me too (having only tried in Blender 3.1 so far)

Since this is fixed in newer drivers, we can consider this resolved.

For Linux I've reopened #97591 (Cycles HIP error with image textures on Linux and RDNA1), since a Windows driver update would not have fixed that.
