System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19044-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 512.15

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.0 Beta, branch: master, commit date: 2022-05-12 16:38, hash: 018acc5688
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Color attributes difference between vertexpaint and sculpt modes

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
vertex_paint_geo_nodes.blend

  • open the included blend file and try to remove the instance objects from the geo nodes (The objects are linked to a color attribute. Using white color to add the objects and black to remove them)
  • when using vertexpaint mode, several pure black strokes are required
  • when using sculptmode paint tool, trees vanish on the first black stroke stroke- when i open blender 3.1 it works fine.

Can confirm the behavior, I assume this is a colorspace issue, @JulienKaspar , @JosephEagar ?
Eventually (after a couple of strokes on top of each other) we reach pure black, but in sculpmode with the paint tool there this can be done with a single stroke.
Also note that Set Vertex Colors in vertex paint mode is immediate (as is using a brush with a constant falloff)

I can also reproduce this. Interestingly if the color attribute is converted to a Byte Color data type then it works as expected.
So this is only an issue when painting float colors in vertex paint mode.
@JosephEagar would be great if you can look into this.
