Minor image editor left click values bug #98378

Open
opened 2022-05-25 17:58:23 +02:00 by tempdevnova · 9 comments

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 431.07

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-12-02 18:35, hash: f1cca30557
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When inspecting an Openexr image file with sRGB color space it gives incorrect raw values.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Open any external Openexr image in the image editor
Left click to inspect values
Switch to sRGB color space
Left click to inspect values
The image editor will now display incorrect values for RGB (not color managed) next to XY

Don't ask me why I inspect an Openexr with sRGB color space, but here is just to let you know this bug exists.

Thank you and have a great day!

I can't reproduce this issue. Using the following image:

exampleSRGBImage.exr

In the background, I see 0.25 in linear space and 0.05 in sRGB space. What values do you expect?

In the background, I see 0.25 in linear space and 0.05 in sRGB space. What values do you expect? The RGB values right to the X and Y coordinates are the values before undergoing color management and show the raw values stored in the image. So basically in the case of images even before the image is transformed into scene linear space. Therefore the value should stay constant no matter what you set the color space. You can try this with a PNG image since for PNG it is implemented correctly.

There is a difference between the color management of the scene---which is what the CM values in the sampled pixel represents---and the color space of the image, which is what Blender will use when loading the image. Changing the color space of the image will actually change the values of the pixels, and that is before any scene color management is applied. Or at least that's how I understand it, does that make sense?

In that case the behavior of PNG images is incorrect, because changing the color space of the image doesn't change the values of the pixels for PNG images. So basically the problem is that for Openexr the values change but for PNG they don't

hmmm, maybe it doesn't apply on byte images. I will tag the module for more information.
