System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.15.11-76051511-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.34 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA RTX A5000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 510.60.02

Blender Version
Broken: Caused by 342e12d6d9

Short description of error

A consistent crash happens while previewing Cycles in the viewport, and changing frame, or changing visibility of objects in the Outliner (which makes me suspect it has to do with the depsgraph perhaps?)

I could reproduce the crash on the Sprite character from Sprite Fright, tried to reproduce on a new file but I couldn't. The crash happens on factory-startup of 3.2 Beta as well (buildbot, May 27th).
Tried my best to clean the Sprite blend file as much as possible, removing most objects, most modifiers, shape keys, uv maps, attributes, World, etc.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the following file
  • Switch the view to Render Preview
  • Force an update by changing frame, or change visibility of an object in the Outliner (e.g. click the display icon in RIG-Sprite)
    sprite_cleanup_for_report.blend

Things I noticed:

  • I've removed all modifiers from GEO-sprite_body_head except Corrective Smooth and Subdivision, removing any of them and changing frame doesn't crash anymore.
  • Deleting all bones in RIG-Sprite (in all layers, in edit mode) still makes it crash on frame change, unless I save/reload.

That's it,
Thanks!

Can I confirm. It's a recent regression.
Looking for the commit that caused the problem...
