System Information
Operating system: WIndows 10
Graphics card: RTX 3080

Blender Version
Broken: 3.1.2

Short description of error
An alpha channel saved in a .PSD file does not appear usable in Blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create image in photoshop, add alpha channel in channels palette. Save psd, ensuring "alpha channels" is checked in the "save as" dialogue. In blender, create material with image texture node. Select psd file, connect "alpha" output to Base Color for debugging or open the image in an image editor view and select Alpha in the channel viewer box in the upper right. It appears solid white rather than showing the embedded alpha channel.

I cannot reproduce the problem.
This is the file I used.
Isolated_right_hand_with_smartphone.psd

It has alpha channel and is usable.
Please provide an image and a .blend file so that we can replicate and confirm the problem.

A guideline for making a good bug report can be found at https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Process/Bug_Reports

Sorry, I'll try to clarify. Photoshop has two ways of storing transparency:

Option AThe most common way is as in the contents of the PSD file you uploaded: the transparency exists in the layer itself. There is no solid background that needs to be masked out.

Option BThe second method, and the one pertinent to my workflow, is by manually adding an additional channel alongside the channels for red, green, and blue that make up the RGB composited image. The layers themselves can have solid backgrounds as the transparency is saved as a separate channel.

This is necessary in game engines to prevent a halo artifact that appears when the image is compressed or downsampled. Currently I have to save out two files: one with transparency baked into the image to use in Blender when creating my assets, and another with transparency saved as an alpha channel to use in a game engine. Both Unity and Unreal recognize the alpha channel when I import a PSD, but Blender currently doesn't.

I'm not sure if this can be considered a bug.

Nothing indicates that the extra channel inside the PSD file should be treated as an alpha channel.

This looks like an extra layer (common for OpenEXR Multilayer images).

As I see it, Blender just doesn't support that level of detail for PSD images.

So, for me, this is more a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior.

Would consider that a known issue at best... PSD is not an open format, and as such Blender support for it is limited.
