Why do we break event handling when operator returns (OPERATOR_PASS_THROUGH | OPERATOR_RUNNING_MODAL), at the end of wm_handler_operator_call()? This seems the opposite of PASSTHROUGH idea to me.

Thing is, we also need passthrough from initial invoke call, since it’s init event here that is shared between ops. But we'd rather not have select ran at all if some other, more specific op can run instead, else getting rid of select running code (getting out of modal loop) won't be exactly easy.

It should be possible to pass through events from modal(). Other modal operators just seem to return PASSTHROUGH without RUNNING_MODAL. The latter only really needs to be returned from invoke().

Actually, the issue seems resolved already...
So we now do get updates when rendering in cycles if eevee material output is selected, but changes are made in nodes that are connected to the 'designated' cycles output node...

patch doesn't apply cleanly, a few errors i can fix, but this many is pushing it, try resubmitting your patch with arcanist using arc diff --update D4602

The reason that you still can register a NodeSocketColor as a type, is because it's 'internally registered' as a NodeSocket... but there are some structures/variables that are not defined in the api. The absence of those structures/values causes all sort of errors in every module that depends on them. That's why it's still an _unsupported_ feature.

please, gentlemen, I don't understand the approach. insert_link() worked just f i n e for my purposes in bpy.types.CustomNodeGroup. now it stopped working - that's an obvious bug... why not simply get it back? how do you even use update()? it does not take a single argument. to handle an event, you gotta have the event passed as argument...

So, how do I use it? update() takes no arguments... how can I determine which socket was affected and where the link was created? to check for new changes, you have to keep the old state in some form or? the only thing I can think of... IFF the function update() function runs automatically on update, one could check the last link in the node_tree and so on... but honestly, that's just not serious:( plus there's even no documentation on it.

To respond to new link events you need to use the update() and check if there's any changes in your existent sockets.

Just one last thing before we create the thread: the node sockets are already doing what I want them to do. Take a look at the screenshot: the layer stack is internally mixing two layers, and, if I connect more, it works perfectly. I can paint in those layers in EEVEE as well. That's why I would like you to expalin a bit more, what you mean with 'not supported'. You mean to say that this works by coincidence? the only problems are the lagging and the insert_link that simply doesn't work. If I understand you correctly and this shouldn't work at all because of no support, then I would definitely like to create the thread

I'm still saying that there's no bug. There's no support for custom sockets, so using them is the real bug here.
If you want we can create a thread in the devtalk, for discussing this with deeper thoughts.

regarding the standard socket types: unfortunately, I cannot go with it, because I draw UI in my custom sockets that is essential to the node that I am trying to build.

Thank you, Miguel. Setting the property helped to get rid of the error, but, unfortunately, rerendering does not go away. when you are saying that custom sockets are incompatible with the building engines, what exactly do you mean? because the socket does output the color properly, it is just updating the cycles renderer each frame. By the way, you cannot see this rerendering in EEVEE but you still feel how it is lagging in FPS.
VERY IMPORTANT: if you close the shader editor, the bug completely disappears! I have just taken a very brief look into internal code but from my feeling (maybe I am wrong) it is the self.layout of the custom socket that is sending the draw updates that somehow conflicting with the 3d viewport. anyways, I find it very interesting that keeping only 3d viewport or shader editor open removes the bug: maybe this will be a good hint for you. Thanks again!

I'll try to take a look into this, but as far as I know, custom sockets are still incompatible with the buildin engines (unless they just have a single uniform).
My sugestion is to avoid custom sockets completly until they are supported. Try to use only _NodeSocketColor, NodeSocketFloat and NodeSocketVector_ to preserve total compatibility with Eevee, Cycles, and Compositor.

solved 'no default value' error by overriding this property in my custom class but rerendering each frame didn't go away

Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) closed T62624: NodeCustomGroup does not see its input in Eevee, works in Cycles as Resolved.

Fixed by rB9e152f919f2f: Python API: add Python-defined node groups for shaders and compositing., though ShadeNodeCustomGroup has to be used now. For custom socket issue you could report a separate bug.

thanks a lot for clicking. is there hope that this will be implemented by release? you know, with custom nodes and eevee, you could make another substance painter out of that. should I freeze this bug report?

Custom nodes aren't supported in EEVE currently, D4370 needs to land for that first

You have different Subdivision count in render vs viewport. Set the same subdivisions for both render and viewport and they will look the same.

Pointiness depends on the geometry, on the difference of angles of the faces. The more subdivided something is the less difference there's from face to face, so pointiness becomes weaker and weaker.

If you want something that doesn't depend on geometry, try the Ambient occlusion node
