Can confirm.
Interestingly, this happens on CPU for me as well (Intel® Core™ i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8).
Also, for me, changing Root Radius has no affect on the size of the "cards".

No, there is no way to get the exact same result in 2.79 and 2.80 with child particles unfortunately. Further I can't see a bug here.

Made a couple of test (without looking at code -- it might very well be the RNG @Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) was talking about): seems like only interpolated children are affected, simple children with all kinds of randomness seem the same in 2.79 and 2.8.

I assume this is because of the more efficient Russian roulette termination from rBcd023b6cecb7.
In above commit Min Bounces was removed.
It has been brought back though rBc9238e638fd5 as Min Light Bounces / Min Transparent Bounces.
You can find these under Properties Editor > Render > Sampling > Advanced
Does setting this/these to something like Min Bounces in 2.79 give you a closer result?
(cannot render atm., but can check later, too...)

@Aaron Carlisle (Blendify) please correct me if I'm wrong, but closing this issue because Blender Render was removed doesn't make sense to me, because you can perfectly use Cycles to bake textures.
But I'm ok with it because it is not a bug but more like a feature request.
For all interested in producing dithered textures, there is a workaround:
Newer GIMP versions support dithering when converting from 16 or 32 bpc to 8 bpc.
So you can bake 32 bit textures in Blender, export them as exr, open the exr file in GIMP, convert to 8 bit with dithering, export as PNG.
Not very streamlined but it works.

EDIT: Just uninstalled all the drivers for the GPUs and did two rounds of clean-ups using Guru3Ds DisplayDriverUninstaller in Safemode and things work again. Seemed to be an issue on my end, works again right now.

Sorry but I think I should have done a better job; Blender is not fully using the GPU in both versions and that’s why the CPU and GPU times are so close.
The reason I said it was is because I looked at the Nvidia icon in the taskbar tray that says it is but when I look at the performance monitor it only indicates 3% GPU usage on both 2.79 and 2.8.
The reason I have not picked up on this before is because I do not use this machine for rendering, I use my tower which has a GTX card.

I used a basic cube without any materials or lighting effects to simplify the test, I checked that Blender is using the GPU during the tests, should we not be seeing better GPU times?

When comparing render times, please attach a .blend file created in 2.79b. Then render that same .blend file in 2.79b and 2.80, and tell us the render time for CPU and GPU.

Not completely, I’m still getting an 18 second longer cycles render time with 2.8 when tested side by side against 2.79b.
It has improved dramatically though.

It's possible to initialize the strength to 1 only if the color is black. See versioning_cycles.c, there's other code there that does this kind of versioning patches for nodes.

That might have been the ideal way to do it, unfortunately I'm afraid that could break older files that only use the emission Color, when the emission strength would default to 0 the material would lack emission. And since this feature seems to be coming post 2.80 that would probably be a much bigger deal then if that change was made during the beta.

Edit: cycles socket for emission_strength default value has been updated to 1.0. (doesn't actually seem to have an effect but doing it just to be safe)

As far as I can tell this is the subdivision surface modifier just being very slow. In the viewport it's disabled due to simplify settings.

If you are trying to use it on a somewhat high poly character model, you are going to have a bad time.

Well i set max sub divs to 0, the. I set the dicing scale to 8 (same as preview), and it still comsumed up to 16gb on avg, do i just need to reduce everything more or what?
