@Didier TRESSE (MagicDid) |I have created a C:\Données\test.blend . I added a Object > Quick Effects > Quick Smoke to the cube. The cache directory is relative to the blend file as indicated, and when I hit Bake All I can play the animation and see the simulation in Blender 3.3 alpha.

I've downloaded the 3.3 daily build and tried to bake a Mantaflow simulation and it doesn't work if the path of the .blend file contains an accent. A single default cube and apply quick effet / smoke doesn't generate simulation data if the file is stored in ..../Données/MyProject/anyfile.blend

@Jacques Lucke (JacquesLucke) you are entirely correct. I just checked in the 3.3 daily build and I actually can't recreate this bug there. When I was testing to recreate it I was using an older build and obviously never re-checked if it was still occuring in master, so I made some changes around what I thought was happening and it seemed to work. But on re-examination this code actually just converts one way, and then back again, and the bug was resolved somewhere else entirely.

Since paths are being encoded into a Python string literal escapePath, it would seem simpler to support arbitrary encoding. e.g.

Can you explain the logic behind the conversions your are doing here? From a first glance it seems like the code does utf8 > wchar > utf8. From looking at the code, I don't understand how this intermediate conversion to wchar helps.

If it wanted to use inf before, it's probably more safe to keep using instead of using FLT_MAX. Importing numpy is not ideal, but that doesn't seem necessary: https://docs.python.org/3/library/math.html#math.inf

In my opinion it's best to use CD_PROP_FLOAT2 as name for the datalayer as that describes the data layout. And since currently the UV system is the only one that uses CD_PROP_FLOAT2 layers I don't think it's already necessary to add special flags. Currently in my patch all CD_PROP_FLOAT2 layers *on face corners* are listed as UV maps. If there would ever be a pressing need for other float2 data on face corners we can always decide to add extra tagging then. I think if a user purposefully creates a float2 attribute on face corners (s)he won't mind them appearing in the UV maps list as well. Trying to solve that issue pre-emptively looks like premature optimization to me.

The way I see it is we're not removing the ability to store generic 2D vector data on geometry, since you can just use a 3D vector. For me that's a reasonable long term solution.

This situation doesn't work because the join node internally just makes a new mesh, it doesn't copy the custom data format from the input meshes. And since geometry nodes doesn't create vertex groups, the result is a generic attribute.

only CD_PROP_UV and no CD_PROP_FLOAT2

This is functionally the same as only having a float2 type though, only it has a different name.
Then the downside is that the name of the data-type encodes how the attribute is used, which is exactly what we wanted to move away from with the generic attribute system.
I think it has been a huge improvement in terms of flexibility and simplicity to have a way to store truly-generic data on geometry.

It would be useful if (like the extrude node) there were also outputs for the new faces created by the bevel, and the inverted selection (all faces excluding the new ones). This is one of the distinct advantages of nodes over modifiers, and I've yearned for it for a long time.

Personally I would have only CD_PROP_UV and no CD_PROP_FLOAT2. It's not clear to me there are good use cases where using either CD_PROP_UV or CD_PROP_FLOAT3 would not work well. I don't think users care much about the differences, they would mainly get in the way.

Looking into this, it's quite error prone that manta-flow is manipulating the __main__ namespace which may be owned by the caller.

@Philipp Oeser (lichtwerk) I am pretty sure this is the same underlying issue as https://developer.blender.org/T98427, and should be fixed by that patch. I was able to recreate the crash on close, but not when opening the preferences menu, and can confirm that it is resolved by the fix for that task that is currently waiting for review.

@Omar Emara (OmarSquircleArt) Yes, you are right. We can't change the default value for objects type. But "group input" saves by default value that you connect into the socket.

Thanks for the ping, @Pratik Borhade (PratikPB2123)! I had this on my list, but didn't have too much time recently to work on Blender things.
I have a first version working now (see video below) and I'll try to find the time to prepare a patch over the next weeks.

I think the issue in the report is that using the node group in a GN modifier sets this default value, yet there is no way to change it.

There are 2 types of default values:
Which you set for a group of nodes
And the value for the socket in its settings.
A group of nodes can own information about installed objects
A socket setup can't
I think, but still need a comment from a real developer

highlight through reroutes would be useful. Currently having your links
organized with a lot of reroutes does diminish the improvements from
this patch a bit
