Thanks for adding this!

This node unfortunately really highlights the issue that we still have in the attribute workflow with switching between attributes and regular values. The inputs here should really all be possible to switch, so for now I don't really see a better option.
In the future I can see this node getting irrelevant once we have something like the planned attribute processor, but we also need to look into making the interface for changing the input type better again.

To this node itself:

  • functionality works great as far as I can tell
  • the sheer size of the node when adding it in is quite worrying to me tbh
    • Looking at it again, I think the Vector type enum can be removed. The result is always an attribute and so can be the input. There is the fill node if a single input vector should be used
    • It generally makes sense to have the default for at least center and axis not be attributes, but for space reasons I am leaning towards changing all defaults to attribute. Attribute nodes are generally leaning towards having mostly attribute inputs and using the type enum as an opt-out. Once we do change to how input types are selected in a way that expands the node interface less we could review the default choices in general. But I would be interested what others think about this.

I've checked again and it is still broken. Dereferencing a NULL-pointer is undefined behavior, so it doesn't necessarily has to result in a crash.

The const AnimData *adt = BKE_animdata_from_id(id); is NULL and is dereferenced in if (adt->driver_array).

It's significantly faster to ctrl + scroll through a dropdown list to cycle through modes than it is to find a single node in a behemoth list, not to mention the behemoth list looks more daunting and scary as well. And you won't believe the number of times you can end up making a useful discovery by simply randomly switching or cycling through modes example in the the math node. As for the use cases "Smooth Corrective" modifier has a length weight mode so i imagine this would be useful for that or in general doing some kind of 'weighted' operation where the weight is dependent on the edge length.

Addons can define custom socket types too, would this work for custom sockets for addons?

Viscosity testing. For PIC, FLIP ratio is set to 0. For FLIP, FLIP ratio is set to 1.

I'm honestly not a big fan of combining the Selected Only option with the filters under one toggle.
To me the selection works on a separate level as it's strongly and globally connected to the viewport and should be a separate toggle from the filters that are local per editor.

Sure, source code is open for you to check and improve. This is not about rivaling companies, blender is a community where everyone who wants can participate.
Have a look at psys_thread_context_init_distribute and usages of ParticleTexture->exist

Unfortunately, the "old" particle system is not an official priority any more, in fact it is End Of Life, see Nodes & Physics under https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Modules

Yeah, distributing via vertex group and distributing via texture have differences.
Neither garantee the exact amount of particles to actually be visible/alive (but vertex groups get you closer to that count)

I would classify this as a Known Issue, but would not hold my breath here.

This is actually working as expected. There can't be two attributes with the same name and different types. We could change the output type of the attribute compare node, but I'm not sure we should. Either way, this is not a bug, so I'm closing this report. The alternative of using a separate attribute for intermediate computations makes sense to me.
