So, I just downloaded '2.80 (sub 3)', commit date - b'2017-12-22'. I started work on supporting it in our addon. But there is a key handler that we use that has been removed. bpy.app.handlers.scene_update_post is gone??!?!?!
I have checked the discussion above and I think that most posting here were in favour of keeping it, but also not in its current form, and re-purposing it to actually do what its meant to do, i.e. only trigger when there is a meaningful change to the scene that affects the final output of a render, either to viewport or final.
I understand that the problem with the scene_update_pre/post handlers constantly triggering is a big issue. In fact this was a big problem for us at first in using it, but we managed to use it regardless. Not having it though, breaks our ability to efficiently tell if something in the scene has changed and what that something is. With no alternative we'll have to poll and that pretty much means using a modal operator with a timer and we're back to constantly running code again, something I believe we're all trying to avoid in 2.8.
Worse, since we'll be forced to do a search on all data to see what has changed since the last run of our operator, the time taken to process will scale linearly with the number of ID blocks in the scene, so more advanced or complicated blend files will get worse performance with the addon enabled.

If any group of vertices is processed in parallel to other vertices, and the grouping isn't well enough defined to argue about what vertices would be guaranteed to be in the same group, then vertices are processed in parallel.

I don’t think this is true, although “well enough defined” is a bit ambiguous. Typical nominclature for parallel computing is that when something is processed “on x in parallel”, all x could theoretically occur at the same time given sufficient cores. In this case, that would mean all vertices are painted simultaneously. But that’s not the case, since vertices are painted sequentially per leaf node. Real concern here is that we want to avoid race conditions between nodes by preventing inter node communication.

It won't be useful as a replacement of the old existing mirror feature of weight paint, so the old feature remains and must be taken into account.

After more looking at it: nobody would want this simplistic symmetry that is not aware of vertex group mirroring, and the proper old weight paint specific mirroring is not compatible with parallelism as it updates the mirror vertex inside the single vertex paint function. Plus, vertex group mirroring is another reason why weight paint may affect more than one weight value per vertex.
To summarize, in many ways the process and purpose of weight painting is different from simply painting color, and these differences cannot be ignored.

Compiled the latest changes here are some feedback :
1.Thanks for fixing the mask bug, but there a small problem, when painting the brush is bleeding over the masked area, here is in the master

and here our branch
in some extend the bleeding is good but it looks like it is too much, i can cope with it.

  • fixed masking bug, & pbvh freeing bug. Still trying to figure out grids...
  • added union in sculpt session for modes. Sculpt fields could use some tidying, but that might be outside the scope of this branch. Swapped out some free patterns with MEM_SAFE_FREE. Swapped a long out for an int, since there's no size difference.

Yes, difference in brush 'visual strength' is expected indeed, especially with big brushes (this shall be maybe a bit more clearly advertised in doc/release notes, btw).

Did some really basic testing and noticed the new weight painting behaves quite different compared to the old one. It applies the weight much less 'aggressively'. I tried to do the same stroke (same speed, same settings, same view, ...) twice, once in blender2.8 (don't have master checked out here right now) and once in master with the patch applied. This is blender2.8:

Maybe it was planned to accept this as different behavior due to the new backend, or maybe we can do so now. Just want to make sure you're aware of this.

Just a quick answer regarding ob->sculpt: v/wpaint just uses (mostly) a subset of data used by sculpt here, and what is not used is just not initialized… So really think it would not be worth to add yet another struct, especially since, as you said, this is fully runtime-only data.
And for sure a renaming is required, just would rather do it in separate commit (before or after, doesn’t matter), and… not sure about what new name to use? sculpt_vpaint? pbvh_data? pbvh_session? And same goes for whole API in BKE_paint.h, SculptSession has to be renamed too…
