It wasn't a time out issue, Blender would just stop operating and windows message would pop up saying blender had crashed and needed to close. Ill try to get some debug info later, some times it list a cuda line number with the error if doesn't just hard crash blender.

VRAM would hit about 1.3 gb before just saying cuda out of memory in last official build with the same scene (think was 2.79b). Downloaded master build from buildbot blender.org, mem went to about 2.2 gb in render window stats then just locked up and windows asked to close Bender as had crashed. I can try a blender benchmark to double check, but cant share the scene as commercial.

yeah apparently half float works better with darker ranges and 16 bit int works better with brighter images, I just need a good above 8bit grey scale option for displace/height generation. In order to not support 16 bit could you hack a way to use the 32 bit path in grey scale to reduce resource usage? Im really not clued up on image formats and is hard to get my head round.

Any chance 16 bit can be supported, No need ever in my case to use full 32bit per channel even for the most accurate height maps, 16 bit would be perfect, smaller in size and still wouldnt have the issues 8bit does. 8 bit is fine for all color, normal etc needs, 16 bit is needed for height, 32 bit is over kill and very memory hungry.

Yep thats right, Ok so the 32 bit image option isnt what i thought? Thought it meant 32 bit float e.g 16 bit tiff or png? Does this mean that just a generated texture with out the 32 bit option will be a 16 bit image that can say for example be baked to create a 16 bit heightmap? Because i use 16Kx16k 16bit PNG files all the time and they are no where near 5gb.

Hey Brecht, Yeah compiler issue in my eye's now after so much testing, The cache thing is not the issue, I manually clean that after every build to force a opencl re-compile and clean old files.

Ive debuged again after changes, Now opencl_util.c at line 398 is giving an access violation following the steps within editor while in debug mode stated above to repro the cause.

Yep i just downloaded the win64 vs 2015 ver and the preview window now works, cpu render works, but gpu opencl render still immediate crash to desktop as soon as hit render button, so basically as soon as opencl starts to compile shaders..

OK, Lol. Ive just compiled master using Vs 2015 and everything compiled fine. Now ive tried the same box on plane with either a background shader with sky texture on in environment light or hdr it does the same thing again, Instant crash to desktop. Works on CPU

Tested buildbot today, HDRI in environment now works. The fact i was trying to use Micro displace on a terrain was then probably the issue when opencl was compiled but black screen rendered. The black tiles rendering seems to be another bug ive encountered with Micro displace in experimental mode on both cpu & gpu. Think you can close this now.

Just thought i would let you know that even adding a background shader to environment lighting with emission shader also instant crash's to desktop. So probably not even a HDR issue directly.

OK, I couldn't send the EXR in the vid as part of payed plugin. Ive downloaded two free HDRI's in EXR and HDRI format and both crash Blender in the same way. In fact every HDR image ive tried now for testing crash's blender with Opencl GPU rendering.

This mixed with a feature that as far as im aware no other tool has would be to bake the bevel normal map but have a conversion tool voxel driven that could take the hard edged original mesh mixed with the baked normal map to generate maybe through marching cubes an actual beveled real geometry version output. Would be very handy.

Could Clipping to frustum sides be changed to allow user defined guard bands?, E.g set guard band = Rendering 10% or 5% beyond visible camera size so less screen screen space artifacts happen. Even if that means rendering at higher res than screen space shown in final would still be helpful and also for AO or any other screen space effects added like GI. The problem with rays behind objects could also use Multiple camera views, like one from slightly left of camera and slightly pointing up and towards the camera focal point, renders one frame and next frame another camera point slightly right of the camera and slightly pointing down and towards the camera focal point gives you beyond 2D screen space which at edge cases would be very healpfull for AO,Reflection,GI. Stick into that multi frame temporal re-projection like with multi frame sampling or AA would be very cool for people who want better than screen space effects even if slightly slower than just your everyday screen space approach.

Ahh, Would it be possible please to make at least VS 2015 supported then? I mean I uninstalled VS 2012 ages ago, Still have VS 2015 as an old code path compiler backup but most VS users will be like me and already moved on to VS 2017. We cant be expected to keep 3 generation old compile paths installed.

Here's a video showing an older build ive done for Opencl GPU with SSS and volumes, Denoise and a few other things not in master, Drop the samples to 5 to make a fast example render.

File Kernel_compat_cuda.h was the prolem, Dont have the error log as just commented out the issue and recompiled but the lines from memory that were causing the issue were 57, to 105 (the # Define are OK, can leave them in and still compiles).

Ok Ill try to cut the shader down not to give too much away, I remember when testing i removed the whole diffuse part of the material with just a single tex image to see if that helped it bake but still didn't work. So ill try to remove as much as possible to see if still breaks bake, then ill be able to just send an open file. Give me a couple hours.

Lukas, Any chance you can update this current patch. It's again one of those examples of a feature that really would be helpful but has just sat on here for so long that no chance of working with master anymore. Being able to output vector displace maps would also be handy, as well as vector displace supported within the sculpt tool for texture's. I know you have a crazy amount to do already but vector displace is kinda standard now even in realtime engines and support in cycles would be VERY helpful.

I was looking at master branch to try something similar. Would it be better to say look at the number of samples set per tile like current implementation that doesn't show progress until the tile is complete but have a division applied that say said every 2 seconds copy tile buffer to display (e.g so you could set how many seconds you want to pass before an tile update to screen, this way you could set it to every 10 seconds or what ever the user wants)

Yeah sorry, Ive just done a duplicate file check on everything and there are no duplicate device files, Looks like VS did something weird because ive got 6 different branches of modified blender setup. Guess i should take the time just to look through all the source file names just to get up to date.

Just a heads up, Opencl Kernel doesn't compile on Master for 3-4 days when rendering in viewport or F12.

Well that kind of response would of been good to start with, Im still not interested any more. You should be more open to new devs, Ive already done a good few fixes undone on your list.

Aghhh, Really? Like i need help to create a working build through make? What i was asking is the behavior i exampled above was normal for this 2.8 branch with having no interface menu's.

Oh well, clearly even though you devs have put out a call to action for people to help convert pre 3.3 opengl you dont want to help newbies contribute.

I might be able to if you agree not to share or distribute or use my setups for commercial use, as all these terrains are to be sold as Asset packs with procedural terrain shaders.
