Agreed that Esc is not really all that ergonomic. I'd definitely prefer it to not be Esc.
Tab is more useful for other things like operator search.
Maybe this is true in other modes but the number of times I need to search for an operator versus going in and out of Object/Edit mode isn't even a comparison. Perhaps other people model by using the search feature but I think I've used it twice since 2.80 came out, while going in and out of Edit mode is something I do hundreds of times a day. Literally. Having fast access to the search feature versus easily going in and out of Edit mode is a no-brainer to me.
Using 1 for object mode is used by some other apps, and it’s also the default mode in Blender. Plus, it mirrors the same order you see in the Mode drop down menu. So I’ll keep it this way.
I thought the purpose was not to be the way Blender is by default but instead to mimic what other apps do? I was part of the discussion earlier in this thread with regards to 1/2/3/4 for Edit mode and I think the argument was made that only one other app uses 1 as an Object mode and it was Houdini or something (which is hardly known for having a robust modeling toolset).

Any chance you have a "Restore" button on that section of the keymapping that's over riding it?
It's live! Last night's build has it included. Everyone go test it!!

If I'm understanding you correctly then what you're describing is something I've wanted for Blender, too. In Max I can be in Edge mode, activate the move tool, hold Shift and just drag out a new edge (basically extruding it to a new polygon). It's wonderful. :)

Oh, duh. I completely spaced on "1" being for Object mode - in my head I was still thinking that that would be Object mode as it exists in Max, which is essentially "select linked" in Blender. Oops!
Tab had been suggested as getting in and out of Edit mode. What's the currently decided way to do that? I know 1,2,3,4 were talked about to get into those modes but how do you quickly get out of Edit mode?
Works for me!
Well, I can see the argument both ways. I'm not familiar with Houdini but I can see your argument for that keymapping. Honestly so long as it's easy to rebind those inputs then it should be fine. I am not familiar enough with programs other than Max to say what the industry standard should be in this case.
Personally I'm torn on Ctrl+D or Shift+D for Duplicate. My instinct is to use Ctrl+D but I feel like since it's adding something to the scene that Shift as the operator would keep more in line with other uses of Shift as an "add" operator. Ctrl+D could then be used for Deselect (though I'd imagine most people would just click in an empty area instead)
I set Tab to the Quick Favourites menu.
I'm torn on this one as well. I do love access to the QF menu being something easily reached with the left hand but so many other 3D apps use 1/2/3 as vertex/edge/face that I would hate to deviate from that. I feel like that would get confusing for many people to be "one number off" of what they're used to when coming from other apps.
1-9 keys are used for the modes/elements (Object, Vertex, Edge, Face, Sculpt etc)
My personal preference would be Vertex, Edge, Face, Object.
