Probably related to T93388 in some way since the object is being dropped at the wrong distance when in orthographic mode -- the object in the video was dropped at 1.55 million meters away from the origin which then leads to the viewport issues when trying to view it.

Please, don't confuse the things. Bump maps have always behave in a similar way, so I never use them.
But we are talking about Normal maps. I've been using normals for years without subdivision modifiers and it always looked good. I had also informed this in the task T89320 which I opened for the same reason, and which was merged with this one bacause of them being related.

And also, to my understanding, it is not related to normals only. It is related to the way in which the engine manages the shading. Because you can also see it in objects that have no map at all. I'm giving an example of that too.

2.93 on top, 2.8 down below:

I'm leaving here the pics related to the matter. Take into account I'm using normals not bump maps, and both are the same file, just that one is opened in 2.92 and then in 2.93 for comparison.


I suggest reading the task T89320 too for better understanding of the pictures.

That's a very bad bug and it's easily reproduced and on the nose. Why it's still not being paid attention to is a mystery to me. Makes 2.93 completely unusable.

I really appreciate that the keymap is being rethought,

but I have to say I feel this can be a bit of a waste of hotkeys in many modes: why? because you don't change modes as often as you change tools in each mode.
Normally you go to a mode, work there with multiple tools in said mode.

So I propose to use the numbers from 1 to 0 and map them to the tools (from the left panel) on like select, 3d cursor, move, rotate, scale, (from the tool panel which are consistent in almost every mode aside from sculpting) and the ones that come after the first 5 would be replaced with the next in the list.

Note that I did it in my case with the numpad keys but with "emulate numpad on" because it brings other keys I use often to this side of the keyboard. but I'm using the numbers from the top of the keyboard.

Now the only mode that would require extra work is sculpt as it has so many tools, to witch I'd do shift 1-0 to add more tools and if needed Alt 1-0 for more if needed, its just that sculpt is a bit over bloated with tools to the point we could fill up an entire keyboard with just its tools.
But maybe that mode could be treated differently too.

Its an Idea and as I said I've been testing it personally for months and makes sense because its easy to remember the keys that are inherent to the modes you use often and its also easy to infere what the keys do in the modes you dont use that often.

Just my 2 cents.

Ok, I got it, some other background process was interfering with the alt + h hotkey, sorry for wrong report, it works fine now after turning it off. This thread can be closed as resolved.

Unfortunately from video I can't see what keys you are pressing and when. But I can't reproduce this behavior either.

Tried clean install just now, deleted all folders in User settings, still Alt + H hotkeys do not work properly even with clean install.

I think it's okay, not a big deal, having switch operator for different modes is what is important, imo. New users will use default hotkey setup, as tilde is not mapped in default hotkeys. More experienced users will remap it, I remap most of default hotkeys anyway, most important thing is for this functionality to be integrated in next builds, even if it won't be mapped to anything, it's okay as a hidden operator. No reason to blow this out of proportion, people will always have different needs, personal habits, different views on hotkey mapping.

This is not completely true.

First of all, the ability of customization is no excuse for the defaults not being the best they can possibly be.

Second of all, Blender is an extreme outlier in terms of how good (bad in this case) the default keymap is. People have different needs, personal habits, different views on hotkey mapping especially in the land of Blender because of just how weird the default state of it is. I have used many other pieces of software in my life, and I am sure you have too, yet I never felt such a strong need to "fix something" in terms of keymap that I feel in Blender. Take Photoshop for example. People rarely feel the need to completely overhaul the keymap before they can even start using it. Where as in Blender, it's rather common occurrence. Software should not require you to invest several days of work into customizing and refining your own configuration before it starts being at least remotely productive.

Probably keeping this operator as a hidden function making this hotkeyable from the get-go and exposed to users, would have saved time and let this operator land in 2.91, as it was planned. Personally, I change the default sculpt mode hotkeys you guys design to the point of zero recognition, and most experienced artists do the same, as far as I know. When you work in DCCs for 12 hours a day you have your own ergonomic keyboard setup that is way different from applications default settings like 100-% of the time. IMO, you shouldn't have fussed about the key conflict here (problems like that are for new users/hobbyists only) and this feature would have seen light way earlier.

For some reason, It doesn't take an eternity to finish my characters.

It is not a problem to retopo a character.
Variable density retopology is a problem.

Having only F2 and the basic modeling tools is not enough.

Any evidence? Timelapses with time stamps? Comparisons?
I guess you didn't even tried to find the most effective way, you just trying to use what is looking cool)
This is the problem with Blender retopology - many people try to put a lot of garbage in Blender, which looks cool at first glance)

Why are you so triggered, you clearly didn't watch the video, Paul.

I am triggered because I develop the most effective manual retopology workflow in Blender for a very long time. If we will make retopology like you shown in your video, it will take an eternity to finish our projects.
Just look at 6:26 sample.
You don't have to select all 4 vertices since 2015 or earlier.
Just look at 18:07 sample.
You extrude an edge, and the tweak its both vertices every time?
Just look at 18:30 sample.
Create a vertex - point to the vertex - tweak a vertex - point to another vertex.
Can you explain what are possible reasons behind so many garbage actions?

Please stop promoting PolyQuilt, it was an interesting concept to play around with, with lots of WOW highlightings and stuff, but in practice, it is less effective in retopology even than regular modeling.

Hi! I have been using Poly Quilt a lot for retopology and made a little guide where I explain how I use it for retopology of organic characters. I really don't like RetopoFlow 3, and it would be sad if Blender will create a separate mode or decides to go the route RetopoFlow 3 did. And it would be so cool if at least the default PolyBuild tool had the same functionality as PolyQuilt in Blender. I think PolyBuild tool should have worked akin to the QuadDraw tool in Maya initially? But didn't get enough development attention due to time limitations? When you say:

  1. - Apply weighted normal modifier to your object

Do you mean apply or just add the modifier?
Because this is a limitation with almost all modifiers. See the console:

ERROR (bke.modifier): ...\source\blender\blenkernel\intern\modifier.c:425 BKE_modifier_set_error: Sculpt: Hide, Mask and optimized display disabled

Unfortunately, this limitation is not stated in the manual: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/sculpt_paint/sculpting/hide_mask.html

I don't know why modifiers of the constructive type also have this limitation. (CC @Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606))

But it is not considered a bug.

I tried that by duplicating the Blender Light theme and setting the icon borders to 1 on Linux with a Nvidia GTX 1080 and didn't see that same flickering, but I think I did see something.

Hi! I think I finally got to the bottom of it. No, this flickering is not related to addons, because even when I do a clean install with no addons it is still there.

Okay, upon further use of 2.90, I have understood that this flickering appears always with any theme with icon borders set to 1. It starts appearing randomly after using some functions in blender and is independent from file versions. Clean installs don't really help, as flickering appears again after a brief period of using various Blender functionality. Truly a weird bug, I have turned off icon borders in all the themes I use just not to experience this flickering for now and will wait for other users to confirm, maybe someone will be able to replicate it more consistently.

Hi! I have updated NVIDIA drivers to the latest versions released in the last couple of days and still have the same issue and I'm not sure if it's GPU driver issue. I know it's not a game-breaking bug, and I can live with it, but at this moment I am just curious to understand the issue and why it happens.

Probably the best free addon as of now for retopology is PolyQuilt mentioned above: https://github.com/sakana3/PolyQuilt. Its functionalities are simple and effective. The only issue with it is that it does not render properly with the shrinkwrap modifier applied, but you can always use auto snapping as a workaround but still, it would have been great if it did respect shrinkwrap. But its relax-tool is the thing of beauty and something that is very useful during the retopology process and other Polyquilt tool functionalities are basically essential. I'd be glad to see something like the Polyquilt tool implemented in Blender's edit mode out of the box. It would have been perfect, to be honest.

Currently there is only a soft limit for the voxel size at 0.0001, but you can also type in something as low as 0.00002. A value of 0.001 on the default cube does still work on my computer, but takes very long to compute, but if I scale the cube down in editmode by 0.01, then even the voxelsize of 0.0001 works. I think that the solution should not be a hard limit of 0.01 in the UI.

If there shoud be a limit, then that should be calculated at runtime of the modifier. The modifier would check the bounding box size and make sure that memory usage stays under some reasonable amount. If the modifier did clamp the voxel size it would give an error message to the user as well indicating that. Keep in mind this is about the modifier version of voxel remesh, and it makes no sense to have an extraordinarily slow modifier in the stack. So for very high resolution the normal remesh feature in the mesh data properties would be always preferred.

IMO the optimal soution would be to have logarithmic/nonlinear sliders which would work similar to the brush radius slider in Krita. This way you would not go into the dangerous region by one click, but rather smoothly descent.

@Greg Zaal (gregzaal) @Bartek Skorupa (bartekskorupa) @Sebastian Koenig (sebastian_k) Terribly sorry to bother you guys, I read that you are authors of that addon in the description. This issue has been reported multiple times (about 4 already in bug reporter). I think it has been overlooked because of a lot of status changes and the duplicate tasks are getting merged. This bug prevents from using Ctrl + Shift + T when textures are on the different drive in 2.83 LTS.

Have you tried ctrl+a and tick apply transforms? I'm using bevel since alpha 2.83 and back to LTS release on Win 10, so far no bugs.

Frankly, I don't like this change for default. It can be an option, but no default. Vertex count in the status bar is a clear solution. I don't need statistics for all the time in the viewport. Sometimes I need to check vertex count or tris count - that's all. Now I will have to turn on statistics overlay and then turn it off? - that's a stupid idea. I need 3D viewport for 3D creation not for statistics, but I need to know how many vertexes I selected/ how many vertexes are in the loop. And why vertical not horizontal? Respect 3D viewport space and eyesight/vision

I'd change the status of this bug to Needs Triage now, since user has provided all the info. That's an interesting bug of Node Wrangler addon, It would be nice if developers could see it. @Munkhsaikhan Boldsaikhan (msbumm) I think you can do it as the author of the report.

Is this the same bug I'm experiencing? Mantaflow is completely unusable as of now for me in the viewport. It always stutters like that no matter what you do. Changing baking type from replay to modular and then back in the cache tab of domain's physics setting helps, but it then stutters again.
