yeah just keep your focus on the area that ngone is and on sculpt mode make a change there and apply the change on base model (the button on multires)

even with smoothing it does not work. odd that it worked in the beginning and now it's not working.

conflicts with emulate 3 button mouse. had to disable the keybinding for this feature to get a reliable emulate 3 button mouse while working.

just a quick Note: the bug will not happen if you toggle all or one of the before modifiers. (show wrap, hide displace OR hide wrap, show displace )
also never noticed this warning before:
Maybe a simple code of preventing users going to sculpt mode with this warning on is ok for now?
crashes after you go to sculpt mode.
works with no crash on 2.80 but crashes on 2.81

here is a test file just add multires modifier
do 2 subdiv in the multires (notice mesh not changing)
go to sculpt mode

it happens because you base mesh is way too simple. it also happens in 2.7
I recommend multires modifier for adding details to an already retopo-ed sculpt. like skin bumps.
