I found the issue with this problem:
I linked a rig from another .blend file
I made a proxy in the new .blend file to animate.
When I click "make local" the model recorded the proxy rig in outliner>scene>linked rig
I deleted the rig, and try to APPEND back from the original .blend rig character (I was doing this instead of proxying it, but rather localy imported).
This is when the crashing started to occurr.

Thank you for your help Evan. I used quotation marks, and it finds the file, starts to render.
I also rendered to the top level of the project's folder. So far it is rendering normally (past 10 frames).
I also found out that Blender had a problem with a linked rig and crashed.
Additionally Blender did not like to render this nomenclature "SCN017_V01_##" for some reason. I changed the output path render name to something like "RENDER#.png" and so far it has been rendering in EEVEE HEADLESSLY without a problem.
I also used a regular CMD windows instead of the powershell windows. I will report novelties when the 600 frame animation is finished.

Hello team. When we get 2 overlapping NLA Action clips, both selected, then CTRL+G, they create a "meta strip" but present none of the meta strip properties on 2.91? (N menu of the NLA editor). Metastrips in the sequencer are grouped individual clips behaving like one. Is there an additional parameter to have such workflow with the NLA? (no grouping is presented since grouping changed to "collections" so the clips just change colors, but don't behave like a grouped compound clip). Thanks.

I animated this character. Sent 2 different animations (stashed) to the NLA editor. 1-100 and 1-250.
I then deleted the actions from the NLA TRacks (otherwise you can't create empty NLA tracks)
Then I went to the outliner and deleted BLENDER DATA filter > Animations.

The relationship lines are the only "map" to something that resembles anything close to a "schematic" view. Just a glance and you can make sure your dynamic 26 hair bone chain is correctly parented early in production.
Relationship lines are a savior when doing drivers on bones as well (mechanical rigging).
No need to remove them.
As for the "filled icon collection", I think it would be a distraction to have a dispair "checkbox - checked" and a similar filled collection icon off right on the side.
It works well -ergonomically- to quickly land a checkmark on the only icon that has to appear "filled" when active (the checkbox).

@David (activemotionpictures) Since I have no experience with softimage at all I don't have much to say about the request to rename the theme. I can ask other developers about your request though. Is your theme update meant for 2.90? If not please update it to that, we're not changing the themes for 2.83 anymore.

Hello.
I went as far as Blender 2.74 and the Theme section, correctly names the current Blender 2.83 "XSI" theme to "SOFTIMAGE".
Could we correctly name it "Softimage" with the most recent file for 2.9 release, please?

Hi, @Hans Goudey (HooglyBoogly) I am maintaining the XSI theme for Blender. I sent a recent correction but I don't know if that's the "recent" update you are referring to.
Also, the theme named: xsi_billrey_2.xml is that the most recent?

The real problem with these warnings are that they start off in a high or low luma value selected by the theme. And the "autobalance" managed internally is unpredictable. If you choose yellow, it will go to the brightest yellow, then lower the alpha oppacity to go to a "neutral" state of the warning.
If you pick red, it will start in a bright red, then it will go to your chosen color red.

Customization doesn't allow to select the text for this (at least not in March 2020, when I captured these pictures).
If anyone has already tried changing text color in current 2.83, please let me know.

This is the XSI theme for 283 with all the colors fixed >>in comparison to Softimage as shown here
*Small fix: pink driver color was made darker for more contrast against white color text.
Additional suggestion: This theme should be renamed to "Softimage" as there are a lot of users who already identifying the colors in the UI as they are accustomed to working from that software.

Any updates on "light groups"? I guess in the end they will be called "light collections". Which serve as a "box" to put data (objects) in it, and get lit.
Collections and their elements do exist organized at RNA level in Blender, currenty.
The only turn around, would be : "Hey user, now *since you always work within a collection*, all the objects inside that collection will contain their own light sources. You can't -any longer- just put random bunch of lights everywhere. They need to be inside a collection. 3 collection with different objects? 3 different individual lights inside the collections!"

BTW Maya theme has all these orange-yellow color coded icons (in blender: Modifiers), Cyan "inner" color for selected buttons and other nice little details for purple (sculpting) icons. So porting the maya theme is going to propose some challenges as well:
The organge-yellow and cyan icon color percentage upon opening the theme is around 35% of the screen space. The rest is just dark grey:

Thank you for this scrutiny on the theme. So we are definitely resolved to make this a 100% resemble theme, and I am glad for that and for all of the users who will be welcomed with these changes in the new Blender. Thank you, guys!
Let the unchecked checkboxes be gray, and let selected checkboxes be green. Trust me, this will guide the user's eye more adequately for checking on parameters. This should be maintained.

Also, notice this is a "color" print. Not a black and white. If there is a b/w printing, nodes and buttons will appear blacked out with those blue and purple colors. Maybe the theme could be named "COLOR PRINTING THEME?"

@William Reynish (billreynish) here's the XSIMOD Theme for Blender 2.83:


There is a long explanation I am doing about the color decisions regarding UIX at the moment on my blog. I will update the link here. Design choices were based on common selection and buttons. Softimage didn't have a wide range of UI elements like Blender has, so I had to set some rules to define how to extend the colors over the other areas.
Incidentally, that's where the Blender's UI inconsistencies started to appear. So I did document it all, now I'm transcribing to something humans can read. I will upload the link when I am done. This will be a much-needed guide for everyone wanting to jump into theme design for Blender.

If this thread is still going on:

  1. I believe the "download expansion pack for _ _ _(categorized)_ _ _ _ _ _ assets" should be available somewhere on the blender.org site or blender cloud for free. Specially when the asset manager lands on 2.82
  2. I agree with the assets that will be natively added into blender 2.8 should be light (probably below 5k poly count)
  3. Where are we supposed to send this content to?
  4. For the new users, where can they attach the CC-0.txt licence file? Where can they download the template and customize it (officially)?
  5. When the asset lists mentions "beard" or "short -male- hair" I´m trying to imagine if it's referring to actual hair particle system or modeled mesh?
  6. When you say "textures should be small" we are acknowledging procedural textures are quite big and complex in the shader tree but really small when saved as asset, correct? So we can create artistic-driven-realistic complex shader networks using procedurals to optimize file size at the expense the new user will have no idea while the shader computes until it is visualized?

So in essence the "industry standard" keymap is just a mix of the most common hotkeys from every major software... in the end someone is gonna have to do the maya keymap, the max keymap, the houdini keymap, and the cinema 4d keymap, and this "industry standard really weirdly mixed mix of things " will become obsolete pretty fast.

Sorry for the negativity. it just hit me, and to tell you my experience, i've turned and help turn a couple of studios and artists to blender, and honestly the only things bothering people are the move, rotate, scale, but really more importantly the way you move around your scene and the rmb / lmb thing, thats it. the rest of the hotkeys they dont mind, and they love having SPACE BAR as search functions because it aids them learning the rest of the stuff they need quite fast, and its all compatible to learning the blender defaults.

just my 2 cents.

Definitely the VSE should be emphasized to work in a collaborative (remote/local network connected) link and append environment.
Tangent animation did the Bcon2014 on this. So it is definitely possible.

I adressed this before, and I will write it again: Please let the layout of the splash screen be *easy* to be customizable by the user. Either by placing it via a template or as a self designed layout using a common code design tool (wysiwyg online editors for css /joomla/wordpress come to mind)

Default ACTIVE tool on Blender is the Cursor. This is frustrating and confusing for first time users.
Default ACTIVE tool in blender should be: SELECT border. As I demostrated in polls, the first thing a USER wants to do on ANY software application is to SELECT (anything).

How would you know I appended other objects (hair) in the scene if the outline representation is broken? (https://developer.blender.org/T56203) I already reported these errors.
I don´t understand why this is marked as incomplete priority? What am I missing that I should include?

I totally agree that the new icons SHOULD NOT INCLUDE THE ENTIRE PENCIL/ PEN.
What´s important is the STROKE look and feel on the icon. JUST use an icon representing the PEN/PENCIL NIB and give focus to the stroke on the toolbar icon representation.
Just like it was on the previous 2.8.5 GP branch.

Not up there on the right of the middle of the viewport, that zone is for MAXIMUM attention. It should remain hidden under the other taskbars...
But you´ve brought an interesting subject on picture A: I call that the "STRESS" zone. Everything (80% core functions) happen on that 512x512 pixels top right corner area. Too dangerous on UIX design.

Yes, modo has 1:vertex selection (and please fix that Blender can do switch directly from object mode context to EDIT mode context upon pressing 1 to select vertices), 2:edges, 3:faces, 4:polygon element.

Could the current representing numbers in a square icon when doing a long pre-calculation in render be switched to a spinning blender logo? Like it's "blending"? Spinning is always a good choice for waiti g processes.... like building light caches.... :)

Flat icons. Better viewing when scaled. Please give support to replace icons like in 2.4 with a set of icons externally read. It's too clumbesome to download blender, deploy and cross fingers to get icons working right. Thanks. Please support flat icons through external .png file.

Commenting on F2478607 on William Reynish document:

  1. Blender icon (without perspective) distortion should be default now. It is communicating clearly a PIVOT (edges around a center) .
  2. On the startup screen. Right after bypassing splash screen, we should have a .png sequence to overlay the interface, showing what the RIGHT click button can do, 3 simple steps at the end tutorial asks: Which interaction mode would you like: RIGHT click or LEFT click? = Leave the choice to the user.
  3. We need floating FOCUS windows. Not just ctrl+alt+U. What if I just want a (selected property) from the property object menu? F6 helps but it doesn´t combine, nor it can stay afloat. Let the user configure more space by "undocking" (floating) windows.
  4. Page 23 makes total sense when using Blender as a 2D application. Finding grease pencil palettes in an object property *yet, there is not a clear view of it on the outliner (or it´s properties) seems confusing for first time users.
  5. Sticky keys are a must (specifically with edit modes. I just want to press "G" and directly move vertices -as a toggle key-) entering edit mode and exiting is almost a 3 step process for every session on the day. Too many wasted clicks just to move a vertex.
  6. We need right click context menu directly from the mouse and not from the bars or spacebar shortcuts.

Really great progress. How possible is it to override the "Do you want to override the so and so file" pop up when we save?
Why do we need a confirmation dialogue for saving something we, out of our own will, want? I mean is no accident when someone intuitively
presses "Save" because they are about to close the laptop, or the library is about to close doors, or the bus has just arrived....
Those are some of the common day to day situations in wich a "do you want to overwrite..so and so" dialogue would prevent the entire
chain of events to happen (from saving correctly without damaging the file while laptop is going to sleep, and it won´t because there´s a dialogue waiting for confirmation).
