It seems that it has been fixed in the Blender 2.80 release. I can not be sure at 100% as steps to reproduce the bug are not clear. It happened to me a few times on different projects. I tried on one of it and it seems ok.

I have the same error. The error comes after appending objects which are already linked in the project you append from. If you delete object you appended, it doesn't work either. You have to purge all orphan datas related to the appended object to make the add-on work again.

Well, I found it faster than I thought. I guessed that it was a Community addon and something that appeared in 3D view and so, by deactivating Animation : Timecode (https://github.com/RayMairlot/Timecode), it works.
It crashes all the time. I renamed the 2.79 folder in C:\Users\Owners\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender so Blender starts without my usual addons and preferences and it works so you're right it comes from this. Do you have a clue where to looking for or there are too many parameters to guess what kind of addon could interfere with freestyle rendered mode ?

F12 works well for me too, it's only Rendered mode that makes Blender crash.
I let you a simple file I created with a plane. On my computer, just going on Rendered mode makes Blender closing after 1 second of render. I also tried with the blender-2.79-42a5624-win64 build of yesterday. I doesn't crash if no geometry is there.

Another Windows user can confirm this please ?

I don't know how to launch Blender from "the command line". Perhaps, we should wait for any other Windows users ?

Well, I got a clue : in my scene, I use Principled BSDF with Subsurface at 1.000. By turning down the Subsurface at 0, it works.
For me, it still even worse with 385.69 NVidia drivers. Blender crashes instead of giving the error and a file that worked with previous version of drivers crashes now :(.

I don't know what to do with the link above. I guess I have to remove the part of the code that is highlighted but where I put the file after this ?

Hi, I have this too.
I tried this :

I did further investigations to help understand what happens.

Hi, perhaps a clue if someone follows this : I changed the way I plug my monitors. Now, the 3 monitors are on the same graphic card (GTX 1060 6Gb). Blender always opens in the monitor that Windows 10 Pro x64 recognizes as the monitor "3" (whether I saved Startup file with Blender opened in monitor 1, 2 or 3). It was the same when this monitor was plugged in USB so it doesn't come from the way monitors are plugged.

Hi again, could anyone take a look at this please ? It's very frustrating :(.

I tested with Blender Render and same thing. So, I desactivated all add-ons installed excepted Cycles and it works so it seems it comes from an add-on, I have to find which one.
I made a screencast of what happens.
I've tested with the lastest build and it's the same thing.

Hi all, I would like to know if there are news about it cause there are a lot of things in 2.78 that can't be done in 2.65 so it becomes hard to me to have a useful startup file :( ?

My bad for wrong object selected for Domain and Flow but let's say you make settings for your Smoke Domain and click by mistake on "Flow" (or "None" or "Collision"), it surprised me to lose settings when you go back to "Domain". It was just a test so not a big deal, I'll pay attention next time ;).
It's under Windows 10 x64, Blender 2.77 x64 release (and last build). GPU for display : GTX 580, GPU for rendering : GTX 780 (used for smoke rendering).

In my opinion, it would be better to back as it was before (if I remember well) : no options for render or at least a warning so no confusion is possible.
Or perhaps, put the Simplify option in Properties -> Render -> Render panel so when you click Render, you see immediatly that Simplify is checked or not.

Will there be a 2.73b release or should I use a build until the 2.74 release please ?
Jan 31 2015
I just tried the "blender-2.73-3f57714-win64" build briefly and it seems ok. Thanks !

In fact not for me, I have to save the startup.blend with 2.65a cause if not, it doesn't save my screens configuration (a bug I reported but as it's a specific configuration, it's hard to find out why). I think as I guess I'm the only one who encounters this that I have to live with that :P.
Well, I tried to delete userpref.blend but that doesn't change anything. I tried to delete the startup.blend, launched Blender and saved user settings and it worked.

Hi, no non-ascii character in my user dir (either the one where Blender is installed or the one which is "Users->Owners->AppData->Roaming".
Jul 2 2014
I understand. The only thing I can tell is that it worked with 2.65 and has been broken (for my step at least) since.
Apr 1 2014
I just tried with 2.69 but it doesn't work for me, Blender appears in my USB monitor (seen by Windows as my third monitor) instead of my 2nd monitor (where Blender is when I save Startup file).

Ok so just to be sure, even if I enter 10000 for particles number to reach the effect I want and 5000 are displayed, it only takes in memory 5000 particles and not 10000 or as the computer generates 10000 first and removes hairs depending of the texture map, there are 10000 particles in memory ?
