I can follow Alex's point of view. However, if I have two 3d views open (and two grease pencil tabs) and I change for example the stroke placement or enable editing, the buttons are synchronized. So I would expect the behaviour to be the same for Draw, Erase, Line and Poly.

It must be opened in the movie clip editor; in the compositor it must be chosen as well.

Sorry, I had not seen,that you already answered. Thanks for the information. I agree that I should not write a driver like this, but Blender shouldn't crash either... :)
Probably I should not assign the y location like this: bpy.data.objects["Text"].location = y and have the driver manipulate the same coordinate.
