Hi, I'd like to work on this if that's ok. Any pointers on where the related code is/how to accomplish this? Also, should jut the gizmo be visible or do we want to keep all the UI items visible?

Is this open to be worked on? If so, a few questions since I'm somewhat new to the code base:
- Should I disable the output panel output path, and how do I do this?
- Where is the code that writes image output?
- Where would I actually place the code that implements this issue?

Ahh I have no idea what went wrong @Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) but here are the four images. I can continue to work on the rest of the screenshots; however, I noticed that some of the documentation around UI related to stereoscopy seemed to no longer be true, even though T65710 marks "Render - Output - Multiview | Outdated Information Fixed" as Done. I can take look into fixing this if you want.
IMO the check for selected item should definitely be added, and to the left of the text. I believe popup location and title location should be kept the way it is, or made available as a non default option, however I wouldn't really mind much if the macOS pattern is made standard

Ahh finally I have some time to work on this! I've implemented @matc (matc)'s patch (D4792) as well as adding the Shift-G keybind for consistency (turned out to be very simple once I figured out how the keymaps worked). Unfortunately, I don't have enough Blender internal/general knowledge to know the inner workings of kdtrees, gsets, etc... does anyone have any pointers on how to extend D4792 to edge and vertex select?
I believe this is implemented now, we can consider closing?

+1 to rename factory settings to default settings. Maybe default preferences since its edit->preferences?

Cool, thanks! I have used blender for a while and know C++, but I am new to blender development - any pointers on how to do this? Mostly I am having trouble navigating the rather large codebase, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think it should be put under Clean Up. Removing doubles is something you do to remove unwanted mesh data i.e. clean your mesh, not an operation that changes the form of your object.
