Agree, @Julian Eisel (Severin) @Jeroen Bakker (jbakker) this is a super important feature for the sculpt process, more even than for the edit mode process.
If something has to be modified to have this merged for 2.83 could be great to define it, the feature is there, it's working, if it has to use the default Face Maps and that's the only problem, then define it so @Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) can modify it and get it ready for merge.
Please let's make this merged for 2.83 :)

This change has rather significant implications and needs broader discussion. Adding the UI team as blocking reviewer.
First off: I don't want to stop the progress - in principle this patch adds a hugely useful feature that would be great to have. It is more the process that is problematic, and it's a general issue we have coming with the 2.8 dynamics.

Afaik this has no further consequences in UI, so I don't understand why the UI team should be blocking it.
If you think there is a general issue with 2.8 dynamics, solve it and bring @Dalai Felinto (dfelinto) into this, but don't use this patch as an example please, because it's clear that this tool has something that usually is not present in other features development, a developer that is also an artist, not just an engineer, and this ensures a pretty good UX, specially because it's being tested at the same time it's being developed, of course it needs further testing, but so far all the people I showed and tried the feature are pretty happy as it is right now, as I said, it may need an internal modification to use Face Maps, but I'm not sure if this is good because performance of classic meshes with millions of polygons is super slow, so if performance is not good yet, this may be implemented as is, and interchange Face Groups with Face Maps when mesh performance is good enough.
I cannot understand this lock, because if this is the case many other patches should be locked, like the change @Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) just did removing Embree from the CMAKE options, it could seems a very simple change, but it has deeper implications since Embree may provoque problems with some addons, for example, I'm not saying it's not a good change, just that the logic followed to lock this patch does not make sense to me.
Or even Face Maps should not be there right now, because they are totally useless, they cannot be used with anything, it's just an isolated feature, the concept is awesome, but if it cannot be used in anything, why is it there? That feature should have been blocked by the UI team too, because it adds clutter to the UI, generates some expectations in the users that later cannot be fullfilled. Once again I like the feature, I think it should be there, but it's incomplete, if we follow the same logic as you stated here @Julian Eisel (Severin) many things should be blocked by the UI team.
Please guys, let's make an effort to unlock a feature that is very important for the sculpt process :)

there are few suggetions for people that has this bug:
For example you have already made model with hires modifier and you want to use Apply Base on it. Like this one


If you just press that button it will ... destroy your sculpt -

But! If you first sculpt something on model ... something, whatever it is

And only then press Apply Base - everything will be ok.

This is after i pressed Apply Base. as you see all sculpt data is on it's place. But topology of mesh is changed. Probably when blender activates sculpt mode it is not load all the sculpt data or... something like this.
there is still problems, if you press Aplly Base 5-6 times it will destroy your mesh like this:

More times you press Aplly Base - more distortion you will get.
Maybe there is a way to... fix positions of lowpoly mesh vertexes by binding them to some closest vertexes of highpoly mesh from multires? And when user press Apply Base it should move only when that highpoly mesh vertexes are moved... (sorry for my english). I don't want to install visual studio and else things because by pc has no memory left on c drive. But i want to fix it, ofk. Because Multires modifier is very useful for making Normal Maps, paint some scars, pores and other things. Dyntopo is great but there is a lot of situations where you cannot remesh your model every time you change it. + baking normal map from multires is faster + very accurate (maybe in future we will have baking AO or Cavity maps from multires, i hope).
For tests i used latest blender 2.82 beta build from Blender.org, blender-2.82-81b7f8efaf7a-windows64
I don't know why, but someone removed old level switch feature frob Multires. This how it was(in 06 month of 2.8 build) -

And now how it is -

I don't know who and why done this. Because bug is still in place, but no level switching anymore.... Why? Please, at least return this level switch to us.

@William Reynish (billreynish) I understand the use case of storing displacement information at different levels of subdivision, but that is not what a Multires Sculpting feature should do. In any case, Multires was added back then when Blender didn't have UDIMs, vector displacement and adaptive subdivision in the renderer. This is now the intended way to rig an animate VFX assets, that is compatible with most studio pipelines and with importing/exporting data to other texturing, sculpting softwares and render engines. I don't see a particular reason to keep it just for animation, but maybe there is still some use case for it that I'm not aware of (I have no idea about animation).
If we want to stop supporting that (which makes total sense), I think we should evaluate how much of the current code can be reused to implement a sculpting Multires (maybe the PBVH_GRIDS code and the iterators can be reused) before removing it completely. Maybe it is less work than it seems if we go with the standard workflow for animation.

I only tested the subdivided cube but I can't seem to be able to reproduce your numbers.

Quite sure unrelated issues i ran into while testing:
I thought i save some time and save the subdivided cube and ran into some crashing behavior

  • Add a cube, subdivide N number of times and apply
  • Enter Sculpt Mode
  • Save Cube_N.blend
  • Quit Blender
  • Start Blender
  • Load Cube_N.blend
  • Run "Invert Mask" (press A + drag left)
  • Crash

Second thing i ran into is when you use the subdivision modifier i get the same 'PBVH nodes' as listed in your table, but when i used the subdivision set ... operator(?) i get MASK INVERT: 1 nodes - 0.000005s nice and fast, but and i pretty much can't sculpt cause blender keeps locking up for a couple of seconds every time i try to make a stroke

  • Add a cube
  • Ctrl-0
  • In UI Select the number of subdivisions
  • Enter Sculpt Mode
  • Run "Invert Mask" (press A + drag left)

Just a humble opinion from a long-time Blender user:
I think merging Sculpt Face Groups and Face Maps would benefit clarity and cross-mode usability in Blender.
Also, being able to have overlapping sculpt face groups in multiple Face Map channels would make the feature more powerful than the comparable ZBrush Polygroups.
One universally accessible face group feature would benefit third-party add-ons like Quad Remesher as well, which is the same as ZRemesher, and extensively uses Polygroups.

I m countering this as well, one more thing to note is, this is happening with many settings under " show tool settings" on the top bar, for example brush, texture, stroke, falloff, ... Better workflow would be, undo should not change this settings.

I have seen some glitch like this before when i zoom really deep, the curve sometimes becomes weird. In your file if you selected everything and do to the interpolation bezier one more time it works well.

Multires has a lot of issues and bugs when used combined with other modifiers. Maybe we can make it not crash by disabling some sculpting features in Multires (bad idea, as this is a unusual use case) or avoiding entering sculpt mode in some situations (like Multires + more modifiers or sculpting in a level other than the highest one).
I don't think we should spend time trying to debug and make proper fixes to bugs like this one (or doing any other Multires related development) before fixing T58473. Even if we fix all these crashes, Multires is going to keep breaking the models, making it unusable for its intended purpose. The end user is not going to get any real benefits from this development work.

I can reproduce it in win7 550ti gtx following this instructions:

  • with factories setting loaded
  • activate dyntopo
  • Pick another brush than the default draw
  • with the new brush selected sculpt some
  • here is the main problem: use the shortcut x-key to activate the draw brush sculpt only one stroke and undo. after this dyntopo will be deactivated.

First look on the update, the slider value seems to be initialize with 50 and when adjusted it stays fixed at 1.

You didn't assign the material to vertex-groups faces.

  • Go edit mode and select that vertex group
  • Go to material panel ( stay in edit mode) with HairCol selected click assign

I have updated my drivers to GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 391.35 and still crashing, and i believe this should not be drivers problem because it crashes in other pc as well. It working fine in Blender 2.80.

When developing the tool, take note of the principles from the Retopo MT addon:

Retopo MT follows Retopoflow way. It provides some parametric way of stripe editing, but it's workflow is a bit clunky, since it has not been tested on complex models.
Seems, author also has gone to F2-based workflow type later due to its flexibility.

Forgot to mention the real reason D key should be bind while those tools are active, the main reason is when doing retopo, bsurface cannot be used while polybuild is active, those 2 tools are really needed for retopo manually.

BTW the devs use a tool called arcanist that will resolve these merge issues by applying the diff on the hash it was created on.

@Erick Tukuniata (erickblender) this is a general fix, not just for RCS. Improving behavior for the latter was just part of the rationale for this change.
Even with RCS, most list like regions/widgets use the left mouse button for selection: Outliner, uiList, animation editor channel region, etc. So it doesn't make much sense to make the file browser use right click for selection. In fact, by doing this the old design was inconsistent.
It may make sense though to additionally make right click select items in the file browser, since that mouse button isn't used at all in the RCS keymap. The outliner still pops up the context menu then though, hrm...

Hello Severin,
This patch solves only one problem but leaves the other. It seems like file browser redesign didn't think about right click select at all, just try to select something in file browser with right mouse click and try the same think with blender2.80. With Blender2.80 we could select easily with right mouse click. Note that when we change the keymap we choose "select with " Right, we have to be able to select with the Right mouse button.

Because with RMS the context menu is with the w key and now with this, there is an inconsistency

Pablo please please please don't start modifying brushes to fit your need, since people like me might use the same brush for another purpose that you don't know ( sometimes i use this brush and i want that weird deformation, and let my imagination fly and make something out of that mess) . Instead make a new brush that will coexist with the old one and everybody can still use the brush that fits their needs. I don't have to explain to you that digital sculpting is about the feeling of the brush not the mathematics behind it.

I follow the link above from @Germano Cavalcante (mano-wii) (Thanks for that ) and install the latest version, now it is working without problem.
When nowadays everyone is doing and uploading things behind your back ( in the background ), drivers are still behind with their manual work. I m pretty i have updated them in close to the beginning of summer.

They added draw call batching in 2.81 to make it faster. (23 sept) The problem is probably related to this. Your old video card seem to have difficulty with this.

Seems fine here (Linux, Nvidia, binary driver).
Visual artifacts on a single computer suggests a problem with the video card/driver subsystem.

Please keep things like multires in mind during the design process. One of the best use cases that I can imagine for this kind of modifier is for sculptors who wish to split objects that should visibly be contiguous into multiple pieces so that they can really crank up the level of subdivision on each individual part for multires sculpting while still having them act like a single mesh for animation, edit mode, etc.

@Pablo Dobarro (pablodp606) wanted to point out that since we have the transform op in sculpt mode ( btw thanks for that i love it), we should definitively use the default transform shortcut in sculpt as well for consistency, so g,r,s keys should be use for transform and not anything else.

I think we should target the default settings to pen users primarily since it's pretty much what sculpt mode is supposed to be used with. Personally I don't think that >anyone should use a mouse unless there's no other way.

Just check you mesh again you, Now i m pretty sure this is not a bug, You don't have enough vertices you have to apply that subsurface modifier. <- that is your problem. Apply sub mod. you will be good to go.

Changing the size does allow me to move the mesh. Problem with this is the brush is too big for the operation needed. However, I'm happy to know this solution.
