I really like this idea, but in the options it is possible to set transparency for the background of the nodes, so in order to avoid conflicts, it may be worthwhile to add a decrease in the saturation of colors.
Perhaps, to indicate a muted node, you can use a special overlay? You can draw it over the entire node, or only in the header:

Working solution for *.blend file in description : in properties (N-panel) of image texture node change Color Space from sRGB to Non-Color:
I confirm this for *.png normal maps. When using export from substance designer (with alpha channel).
Solution to the problem for me - using Color (instead of Non-Color Data) in image texture node, or sometimes - in properties (N-panel) of image texture node change Color Space from sRGB to Non-Color.

It looks like a problem like this (T57457), but in this case the movie and image sequences are not updated in Cycles too. Unlike the background images in the camera settings, which are updated in all render engines (Workbench, Cycles, Eevee) in all view mode.

The variant from Daniel Salazar in another branch (https://developer.blender.org/T57457) works only with video textures (textures type 'movie' displayed and rendered normal).
