After dabbling a little bit in blender afterwards, I figured it wasn't exactly a fix. It's still slow, but it's way faster than what it used to be. Considering the fact, I'm not sure why it doesn't work properly, and why it is only Blender since all my other software seems to be running perfectly fine (zbrush, photoshop etc). And why it happened straight after the crash.
Alright guys, I managed to fix it believe it or not. So I noticed the start up message said:
Al lib: (EE) UpdateDeviceParams: Failed to set 44100hz, got 48000hz instead. I googled that and found a solution with placing opengl32.dll in the same location as the blender.exe - that did the trick.

I'm not sure I was clear about this - but Blender was running perfectly fine up until the crash, old drivers and new, so it's not a problem with my graphics card. Other software is also running just as they have, so i'm convinced the problem lies within blender.
