So I understand that Norm here is a sort of threshold, right? Then, setting Norm, is like setting the "main level of smoothness" of the image.
Could this include a time-halt condition?

It may be that there is something to be fixed or improved here. The first thing I would suggest to investigate would be rendering the two MIS components separately, by replacing power_heuristic() by 0 or 1, that might reveal something. On the other hand it might just be a case where both MIS components are noisy.

Adaptive sampling is certainly a feature we want to have in Cycles. I think we need a more advanced implementation than this though, with fewer users parameters, but mainly something is more robust. Looking only within a single pixel with a simple metric like this is not very reliable and will give artifacts in common cases. Maybe this is good enough, but then we'd really need to see some renders to prove that.

The recent denoiser infrastructure might help to get a better variance estimate, and to access pixels from neighbouring tiles by keeping them around.

Its a Xeon Phi 31S1P (BC31S1P). Got it cheap on ebay. Just want to see and try this CPU.

Hi there, I just ordered a Xeon Phi CoProcessor for testing. Will be shipped here shortly after Easter. Can you enlight me if the Phi is support in Blender allready or do I have to compile a version for me. Sorry to say, I am not a developer, this is all modern chinese to me.

I renamed OMP Device to OpenMP Device. I used "master" from this week. I added the missing files. The new device works with GCC and with Intel Compiler. I had to disabled qbvh and SSE for Intel Compiler. The offload mode has a problem with util_debug.h ( problem with static value of class = undefined reference, I disable it with pragma).
