I get the crash 100% of the time on Linux with any 2.81 or 2.82 build, with these steps:

Why were the symmetry options removed? I know there was a lot of confusion about the symmetry/mirroring options on the quick tool settings bar, but now the symmetry painting options are gone completely.

Sorry but this doesn't seem right. The X/Y/Z symmetry options were working fine until the latest build and made it possible to e.g. quickly paint a ring of weights around an object using the radial symmetry option.

Yes, looks like that part of the Tool Settings bar works in a different way now. Actually it is quite misleading in 2.80 because the X button and the Mirror X choice in the menu right next to the button have different functionality. 2.81 and 2.82 have three buttons for enabling each of X, Y, Z symmetry and the related drop-down matches these.

There seems to be a difference between the menus in how the tools are activated. From Vertex menu / Smooth vertices there is instant effect and the tool settings appear in the lower left corner for further adjustment. The toolbar tool requires you to first drag left or right with the mouse to modify your mesh and afterwards pops up the tool options on the viewport corner.

Ok, thanks @Marcus Papathoma (machieb) that's the explanation. On Linux /proc/cpuinfo shows the CPU feature flags which for me includes sse and sse2 but no higher.
Us with an old CPU but a newer Nvidia GPU can still use the Optix/Cuda denoiser and related Blender add-ons.

Having the same problem with OIDN giving a black render result every time.
