While updating our shaders to workaround this bug we noticed that the added bump node could use any texture for height input and the resulting normal pass after adding this to another bump node would be wrong.

Tested it with yesterdays build. RAM usage stays below 12 GB on a 32 GB system. It no longer fills up RAM and swap file.

Under Windows 10 RAM usage stays below 15 GB (around 9-12 if I remember it correctly). In ubuntu 17.10 it never stops filling RAM and swap file. Can't do any further tests though since I'm not at work the next two weeks.

So maybe disabling the render layer in properties panel should mute the renderlayer node too? If I mute the renderlayer node and leave the renderlayer enabled it still renders the renderlayer, so in 2.79.1 I had to disable in properties panel and mute in nodes to turn the layer off?
Tested it with some blur nodes between Renderlayer and Composite - in this case 2.79 also starts to save empty images. So maybe its more a design decision: should disabled Renderlayers be skipped in compositing or behave like empty/white/transparent image.
I made two Screenshots for better explanation ...
But its not "some input" which is disabled, the renderlayer itself is disabled in the render layer tab! And it works in 2.79 but not in the newer builds. The file node just saves out an empty image for the disabled layer in 2.79.1 which it did not in 2.79.

We figured it out - its a problem with file paths. We use textures (which affect roughness) linked from different volumes. So .blend files saved in one OS dont work well when opened in another OS. I guess we had to change the way where we store our textures ... should be at least on the same volume so that relative paths will work.

Magic Mouse behaves like you described it. Scrollball on the Mighty Mouse does zoom again.

We tried with OSX 10.11 and a Magic Mouse - same problem.
Its the older wired Apple Mouse with the small Scrollball (http://www.gravis.de/Zubehoer/Original-Apple-Zubehoer/Apple-Eingabegeraete/Apple-Mouse.html). I'm not sure but I think its smooth scrolling.
