I have the same issue on macOS 10.14.6, AMD Radeon Pro 580X, both with the buildbot version (Blender 2.81.12, 21-sep, hash c71be416e09b) and with a local compiled version (2.81.12, 22-sep, hash c71be416e09b). The issue did not appear in versions before that.

It seems to have been a corruption in the .blend file.

Update: storing output in a local directory does not change the crash behavior.

I can appreciate that for armatures, but if Blender shows bones as solids in Pose mode, I expect them to behave as solids. Current behavior feels inconsistent.

I just did a rebuild today (2.80.72, hash 55814cd31ff4, macOS Mojave 10.14.5). Selection behavior is better, thanks!

Circle select does not seem to work for me. An armature is only selectable by selecting the root bone.

I used the may 23rd 2.80 macOS build from blender.org and in a compiled-from-source version (2.80.71, rebuild after clean and update from git this morning)

I agree with @Jonathan Williamson (carter2422). There are lots of suggestions, but what in Blender needs/are we improving? What does an artist need to be able to do better? And how much better? What constitutes sufficient improvement?
