yes, it's still an issue! I've tried it right now and the example scene caused a displaydriver crash (amdkmdap) in cycles view, but not immediately. Fortunately my pc didn't crash at this time!

For me is already a big improvement with the fix from Clément, whit almost identical framerates in comparison to the stable 2.8.
And it depends on the scene: In one case with 20000 scattered plant instances the 2.81 alpha from oct 5 is near double the framerate in eevee. And in another test with 40000 scattered (with Jacques Lucke's scatter objects) subdivided suzanne's, 2.8 is a bit faster then 2.81

First I'm on Windows 10.
For me it seems the mesh is somewhat broken. It crashes randomly and often as soon as I go in edit mode, and it does it just in this case, when the uv-editor is open on a second window(screen). If I have the uv- editor open in just one window together with the 3d-view, it doesn't crash.
And if I convert it into a mesh again, it stops also crashing with second window and uv-editor open...

I've made some Screenshoots to illustrate my issue:
Ist broken on my workstation and on my Notebook and booth have AMD GPU's, so if its Driver related issue, then just AMD. And I've a working 2.81 Alpha Version from 2019-09-10, which renders the hdri completly fine. So there must be some changes the last days which broke the mapping node atleast on my side. Have you tried it with nvidia or AMD GPU's?

Ok, I get also a Bluescreen. My GPU is a AMD Radeon 7. Could you also check my bugreport: https://developer.blender.org/T70137 and try my testfile (just open and go in rendered view).
If it also freezes and crash your System, well than blender 2.8(1) has serious Problems with AMD GPU's !!

Here a Pic with roughness set to 0.2. Looks fine to me! Don't Forget to set the Filter Quality to 8. It makes a big difference!
You have obviously wrong settings. Try to set the "clamp glossy" value to 2, increase the "Cubemap Size" to at least 1024 and set the "Filter Quality" to 8 and it should work!

Thank's for fixing! It works perfectly now.

Any news, when this bug will be fixed?? I'm still unable to create trees or hair with alpa textures and proper shadow casting in Eevee!
And BTW I have now a AMD Radeon 7 and it is still the same issue!

I can confirm this bug! Its very annoying. But it occours only, if faces are smooth shaded. If there are flat shaded, it works.

I don't know, if the bugfix is already in the latest build from today. If yes then the bug is unfortunately still there (atleast by me). And it doesn't matter, if the latest driver or not! I've tried many of them due to instability of my system (graphic card). But it seems it is only windows 10 and AMD GPU related issue...

That is nice to see! have you also linked the image texture node in the black color slot of the checker node?! Without a linked img node my alpha clip shadow works also! The bug just appears with the alpha channel of the image texture node (at least by me)! With prodecural nodes it works...
Ok, it seems like, this Bug is only related to AMD graphics cards or there Drivers!
It would be interesting to know, if the behavior is the same with Nvidia cards. If its not and it works for example with a gtx 1080 (ti), than it should be easier to isolate the error!

I have the exact same Problem and my shadows are also not working, when blend-mode set to alpha clip or hashed. But in my case it is just in combination with image texture nodes, which includes a alpha channel. Whitout an Image-Tex. node it works. So unfortunately I'm not able to create trees or hair with alpa textures and proper shadow casting in Eevee!
If interested, you can see my bug report here: https://developer.blender.org/T61129
For me it seems, this bug is only related to AMD Graphics cards or there Drivers...

Forgot to say. Yes I'm using the latest graphics driver!

Ok, I've made some pics to show the issue.
In the Image above you see the behavior as expected. The cylinder and the transparent BSDF shader cast shadow on the cube behind them but...
