To be specific: that is the version that I was trying to get working: blender-2.71-OSX_10.6-j2k-fix-x86_64.zip

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, a very curious problem and if it was a common one I'd expect much more feedback about this - I mean, it wouldn't hard to spot!

Workaround: Manually entering the selected path in the file selection screen does work, e.g. I can manually enter /Users/MyUserName/Documents, and the Blender file selection screen navigates into that folder (no it is not a read-permission thingy). It's just that navigating with the mouse and (double-clicking) on folders (to navigate into them) or files (to select them) does not seem to work.
