Tested f07f069ce268 of wintab_fallback_walknav with the changes from Diff 39388 manually applied (the "return" and the "before focus lost" case). If I understand correctly, this patch is the latest state of the development. But I'm not sure what this patch is based on. My git says it doesn't apply neither to master, nor to wintab_fallback_walknav or fix-tablet-walk. I'm not very proficient in this stuff, so I'm probably doing something wrong here.

Got a little bit lost in branches, but tested the linked build (f07f069ce268 from wintab_fallback_walknav). It's much more stable than the previous version, but it still has some issues with the pen repositioning. For example:

  • Make Blender window not fullscreen.
  • Tap the pen in the 3D View.
  • Enter the walk navigation (Shift+~).
  • Get the pen in range without touching the tablet surface at top, bottom, left and right.
  • So far everything should work fine.
  • Now get the pen in range outside of the Blender window (touch or no touch doesn't matter).
  • Get the pen in range without touching the tablet surface at top, bottom, left and right, inside of the Blender window.
  • Now the view occasionally jumps around when the pen is repositioned.

Not sure about the reason for this, but it doesn't happen with my silly hack diff.

Checked this patch on Windows with an old Wacom Bamboo and Windows Ink enabled. It kind of fixes the pen repositioning. But there is a more important issue - sometimes the tablet walk navigation goes into an uncontrolled spin. Not sure about exact steps to reproduce, but it happens more often then not. It apparently doesn't occur when the pen has been tapped prior to entering the walk navigation. It's hard to tell whether the previous issues are really fixed with this unstable behaviour.

Issues found:

  • After minimizing the window stays active. Can call a save dialog with Ctrl+S; Alt+Tab order is broken.
  • After Maximized->ToggleFS->ToggleFS window is in normal state, when maximized is expected (already mentioned).

I know what you mean, but just slow it down a bit...

I also understand the point about the context menu. And the other programs like Notepad or Windows Explorer do just that - they will restore to the previous state. So if the window was maximized, it will both "Restore" and "Maximize" to the maximized state. And I don't believe I have seen a program that would change the window state after clicking on it's taskbar icon twice.

The original issue with the title-less window was not very important. At least from a point that not everyone uses fullscreen mode, and definitely not many users will get to restoring the fullscreen window using the taskbar menu, that is hidden by the window. Though it would be nice to get fixed. OTOH, the created issue, that makes the window normal state after minimizing and restoring of the maximized window, will be noticed by the users. I believe most of them use Blender in maximized window state, and a lot may be annoyed by the window changing to normal after being minimized.

Yes, the only change that is necessary is removing the WS_MAXIMIZE style. The reason I removed the SetWindowPos call after SetWindowLongPtr is because I'm not sure it is needed. My bet is that SetWindowPlacement should flush whatever "certain window data is cached" there. That if it isn't skipped at all, which seems to happen when it is called with certain params that are equal to the currently set ones (like WS_MAXIMIZE and SW_SHOWMAXIMIZED). Also everything works fine without the SetWindowPos. As I can't find any proofs one way or another, I'm ok with it being left there or removed. Still while the ~WS_MAXIMIZE trick does seem to work without any issues, I think it is a bit of a hack. I've tried to find some explanation of the current behaviour and learned nothing. Win32 API docs are quite vague on this topic, to put it lightly.

Can't reproduce. But your scene is way too heavy for your system specs. Especialy the laptop object that has about 20M tris after the edge split and subsurf. It is likely you're running out of memory. And even with enough memory (about 10+ GB) the scene will require more than a mobile 2-core CPU with integrated graphics to comfortably work with. You may consider lowering the complexity. At leats get rid of the modifiers on the laptop.

The BezierCircle mesh in your example file has it's normals flipped (see Overlays -> Face Orientation). Probably the mesh was extruded to the wrong direction along Z-axis. You can fix it by going to the Edit Mode on BezierCircle, selecting all verts, then Mesh->Normals->Flip.

Both blend files look somewhat corrupted to me.
The first one doesn't open in both 2.93 and 2.79 (missing DNA block).
The second one crashes 2.79, opens in 2.93. But still it has some weird stuff going on inside. For example, it has few extra screens (Default.###) that crash blender when trying to access some of their properties or delete them. For example, accessing Screens/Default.008/Areas[0]/Spaces/Properties Space crashes.

Can confirm. Checked 83.0, 83.5, 83.12 on Windows with 3060Ti (latest studio driver). The LTS appears to be built without sm_86 support. It says "CUDA binary kernel for this graphics card compute capability (8.6) not found" when rendering with F12.

This is caused by MOUSEMOVE events happening before KM_RELEASE. On Windows I always get the events in this order: KM_DBL_CLICK, MOUSEMOVE, KM_RELEASE. MOUSEMOVE happens even if the mouse didn't move. Clicking a touchpad button without touching the touchpad still generates it, for example.

Only pass through the events we really need (WHEELDOWNMOUSE, WHEELUPMOUSE, MIDDLEMOUSE). This avoids another button being put into edit state by a hotkey operator, while a previous button is in edit state. Also it greatly reduces the possible impact of this change making it safer. Overall, before this patch all the events were blocked, after - only the mentioned 3 are passed on.

@Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) Agreed. And my current plan is to pass through only the events we are interested to pass through (WHEELDOWNMOUSE, WHEELUPMOUSE, MIDDLEMOUSE, maybe something else like zoom, etc.). For that I intend to leave everything as is in this patch, but modify ui_do_but_textedit so it blocks everything except those events. Currently it passes through every event it doesn't handle. Though I need a bit more time to play with this to check if I'm not missing something.

That's because current search looks into the addon name or author only. In case of the OBJ importer the name is "Wavefront OBJ format" and the "import" word is present in it's category: "Import-Export".

Can confirm on Wintab. Current implementation of the walk operator expects event->tablet.is_motion_absolute to be set for pointing events with absolute coordinates. But current Wintab implementation explicitly ignores the events that don't have a button pressed (GHOST_SystemWin32::processWintabEvent). This results in tablet hover events being processed by GHOST_SystemWin32::processCursorEvent and having their tablet data set to GHOST_TABLET_DATA_NONE, hence no event->tablet.is_motion_absolute.

Could you check if the problem happens with 2.83.2 or 2.90 Alpha daily build. There has been an issue of cycles animation rendering randomly crashing, that may or may not be the cause of this. The problem was fixed in those versions.

Nevermind the request for content. A bug report @Thomas Larsson (thomasl) created explains the situation perfectly. Looks like there is a weird default hardcoded value of 100 frame duration. I've already found where it is, changed, tested - works fine in this usecase. Will post a patch after updating the repos, rebuilding and testing. Will need some devs to look at it, as there may have been some reason for such value I don't know of.

The problem was that the Image Texture nodes in the material graphs had their image_user objects misconfigured. The image_user (https://docs.blender.org/api/current/bpy.types.ImageUser.html) is an internal object, that lets renderer know how to use a texture. It's not meant to be directly accessed by the user, so it has no direct representation in the UI. It is indirectly accessed when you create a texture. Try adding a texture node to some material, and then set it to some video (or change its source type to Movie or Image Sequence) - you'll see the options like Frames, Start Frame, Offset, etc. So this is used when creating animated textures (here's your use case for a 100 frame texture). But it has no sense with texture type set to Singe Image, as was in the file. There's also an advanced mode of the Outliner, meant for the scripters use, that can show all the internal data structures of a blend file. It's called "Data API" (second dropdown on the left in the outliner header). There you can drill down to the objects in question. The path would be Materials>MATERIAL_NAME>Node Tree>Nodes>TEXTURE_NODE_NAME>Image User. I'll remind that changing stuff directly in the Data API outliner mode will most likely break something if you don't know what you're doing.

Thanks for the report. It appears this crashes because Blender ran out of memory.

With D8161 applied I don't get NULL layer_data crashes any more, but it still crashes for different reasons while holding Tab in "normal_map.tangent_space_bug_r1.blend" test file. Attaching some crash descriptions with stack traces. All crashes are different, except 1 and 2 are similar.

Updated and reset git and svn. Deleted user preferences directory. Rebuilt both Debug and Release in a clean directory. Only cmake changes: enabled CUDA and OptiX.
