I dont have maya or 3ds max. this fbx is ok with windows 3d painter and daz studio. I tried to open in daz and save again to work around but it introduced some daz studio things not needed. I suspect that the reason it cannot be opened in blender is that I put chinese character in file name when I saved it in marvelous designer. Marvelous Designer uses fbx sdk, it should be ok with maya and 3ds max in my opinion.

Regarding OBJ file, I guess we have no issues here because we do not have the MTL file associated with it (its path is the only textual info in an OBJ file I think…).

From the error report it seems that you are using a version of the Ivy Gen add-on in the config folder that is located in the path defined in it. Please remove it, or move it away from the folder and enable the add-on shipped with Blender that should be located in the Blender install / unpacked (for the zip version) directory/2.79/scripts/addons/add_curve_ivygen.py. Let us know if it worked for you.
A similar error related to trying to grow ivy from a vertex in T51753 was fixed and it is included in 2.79. Your specific one seems to be related to changes in the Blender API and should also be fixed before 2.79 release.

@Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) LGTM, although this is probably good for UV's and vertices, think normals can be left at 4 (%.4g is fine too).

Thanks. That's from another add-on (that shouldn't be messing with anything in this case, but apparently is.) I'll contact the developer of that add-on and reference this thread, let them know what's going on.

I suggest to use %.7g. It will ensure you have 7 digits of precision on both sides of the decimal combined, like float values have. For very small or large numbers it switches to scientific notation.

Not sure this is a good quick hack - mainly because it's quite a detailed option - should all ascii formats have precision for UV's and verts, ... normals too?

blender is not using Autodesks FBX SDK (iirc for legal reasons - free but not opensource...) but instead something that is reverse engineered.
So it is not as easy as changing a preset/option unfortunately... Supporting every flavor of FBX is therefor tedious and timeconsuming.
Can this be done? Probably yes. Will it be done? I have my doubts. But like I said: lets see what Bastien has to say.

Another possibility would be to get someone external paid to do this (you could try here or here)

Just tried Maya 2016 and Unity 5.4 and UVs come over without problems in ascii fbx.
3Ds max 5.0 is more than 15 years old, I think there is nothing we can do on our side to support something like this.
Not sure about the trail of 3d 3d 2015 [I guess you mean 3Ds Max 2015? ;)], cannot test this. But I would be surprised if this is not supported there...

Again, was there any (error) message upon import?

If I export ASCII FBX 6.1 I can see a LayerElementUV and corresponding stuff in the exported file.

Could you be more specific in regards to which 'other programs' have trouble importing those UVs?
Do they report any (error) messages whatsoever?
(I can try Maya/Soft/Unity tomorrow)

You can try May maybe there will be it the same way. I tried the trial 3d 3d 2015. Only the binary FBX works fine, but it does not exist in the blender.

Absolutely! Anything to bring Blender's FBX compatibility up to par. I'm seriously considering migrating to Blender for my work and FBX compatibility is critical for me. This would be a huge PLUS in Blender's favor :)
