Well, there is no BoundingBox for empties, so I assume we gotta make a special dummy for empties in BKE_object_boundbox_get or just make an exception in pchan_culling_test_custom for empties (always returning true, thus always drawing them [for selection])?

Julien Kaspar (JulienKaspar) triaged T98731: Vertex Paint mode can edit only 8 color attributes as High priority.

We agreed in the recent module meeting that this bug should be prioritised for the release of Blender 3.3. So changing the priority to high.

This behavior is same in 3.2. Created separate report T99288: Color attributes of index above 7 deletes after entering edit mode

Did a bit more digging. My Sandy Bridge hardware is an 11 year old design and a few generations (!) before Blender's declared minimum. However it still runs, even EVEE! I've found modern laptops are so constrained by cooling that with Cycles renders this old setup is not THAT much slower than what you can get on a budget today.
OpenGL support from the Mesa drivers is a bit vague. Mesa 21.3.9 implements the OpenGL 4.6 API, but the version reported by glGetString(GL_VERSION) or glGetIntegerv(GL_MAJOR_VERSION) / glGetIntegerv(GL_MINOR_VERSION) depends on the particular driver being used (i.e. the chipset).
So I guess I'm going to struggle to get anyone to do anything. It looks like a simple bug and it would be really nice to make it to the next LTS release.
