100% gpu when timeline is paused #100549

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 511.23

Blender Version
doesnt matter 3.2,3.3,3.4

Short description of error
some scenes will use 100% gpu when timeline is paused instead of stopping rendering.
they go into some kind of max-fps mode and eat up all available gpu.
Other scenes will drop the gpu usage to 0%(like supposed to).
its a bit random but ive encountered this problem very often.
i dont know why it happens , my render settings are low , only a few grease pencil layers and some image planes.
ive attached a file with a scene doing that. aybe you can find the problem

thanx

girl standing3.blend

girl standing3 _ reduced to nothing .blend

ok first attachement is the orig file , watching a seperate viewport on the second monitor maxes out my gpu completely ,

but ive also attached a file where i actually deleted most stuff , so even with nothing in the viewport it still uses constant 36% ... in a file without this error the gpu usage goes back to 0 or 1% when animation is NOT playing , but here the playback with its fixed framerate uses less juice than when the scene is paused.

so A) there seems to be 2 problems , one is that the scenes doesnt calm down at all when paused but instead goes into "unlimited" fps mode instead

and B) with every greasepencil object this becomes more problematic until we are at 100% gpu all the time ...

since i had this problem in SO many files already (id say more than 50% of my scenes) maybe its kinda triggered by grease pencil layer effects .. ill try to reproduce it in a synthetic scene

As I do not have a second monitor to try this, just to clarify, do I need a second monitor to replicate this issue?
Does removing the drivers you have in your scene resolve the issue?

no you dont have to use a second monitor , when you open the file it should open 2 windows one with the workspace and one with just a big 3d viewport. you can even close the big viewport , the ramp up in gpu usage just wont be as dramatic . must be in material preview or render preview mode of course.

this scene doesnt contain any drivers, and other scenes with lots of drivers dont influence this behaviour.

the uploaded scene is even rather simple, render settings are turned waaay down , its only a few GP objects and a bit of geometry.

i tried to recreate the bug on purpose but it seems to appear randomly for different blend files. its not influenced by scene complexity either.

the difference is simple :

files without this bug go down to sub 20% gpu if the scene is paused and use more gpu when scene is playing.

files with this bug use the the gpu accordingly when playing back but use much more gpu when scene is paused.

the uploaded file uses around 50% gpu in playback and around 100% in pause (on the big viewport), its very annoying becasue the pc fans are super loud (and my energy bill goes up too)

I can confirm the rise in GPU utilization in uploaded file. This appears to happen because of EEVEE viewport sampling.
Set its value to 1 and see if that makes any difference

update:

im dumb.

i actually never bothered to read the tooltip on the sampling tab in render settings,

so "0" is actually highest sampling rate instead of lowest. thats why its trying to use all available gpu when i pause , its unlimitlessy refining the viewport graphics in that state.

so for me just setting it to "1" fixed the super high gpu usage. (just took me somewhat 2 years to realize lmao )

another roundabout 20% gpu usage in pause came from turning on ambient occlusion though.. its also contantly recalculated even if blender isnt touched.

maybe that one can be tamed if nothing in the scene is changing, playing or animating.

Hi, thanks for the update.

I'm not seeing this in uploaded file. Do you've example of it?
Can we close this task if original problem you've reported is fixed already?
