System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 516.59

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.1, branch: master, commit date: 2022-07-05 15:44, hash: a2d59b2dac
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Deleted vertex groups reappearing during weight paint

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I created a leg mesh, I gave it 3 vertex groups to identify it as the right leg, I gave it an armature. I copied the right leg and mirrored it to create the left leg. I then renamed the vertex groups accordingly to identify this as a left leg.

Upon then clicking in the viewport to paint a weight on the mesh the vertex that was renamed triggers its old name to reappear as a new vertex group with its own weight.

I try to remove the vertex group though it always comes back. It does this for every vertex group. Each one triggers an old group to reappear.

I export this as a glTF after removing the phantom vertex groups and threeJS seems to still see the phantom groups and their weights even though I "removed" them causing the mesh to distort. Albeit the glTF viewers that I have used do not see this. I suppose the distortion occurs after the armatures are used in the scene?

Not sure I follow.
What are the steps exactly from opening that file?
@PratikPB2123 : should this be tagged #animation_rigging (rather then #sculpt_paint_texture) ?

  • Open .blend file
  • Switch to weight paint mode
  • select any vertex group -> Paint on mesh (new vertex group will be created. If we remove it, it'll appear again on next stroke)

Looks like this occurs because symmetry along X is enabled
