Fractal subdivide behavior change in 2.63 (r45996) #31139

%%%* Open default 2.63

  • Delete default cube.
  • Add plane mesh.
  • Go into edit mode.
  • Click Mesh Tools -> Add: Subdivide.
  • Under Subdivide Change Number of cuts to 10.
  • Under Subdivide Change Fractal to 5.

Result: Fractal subdivide (in default mesh plane orientation) only changes on the Z axis.

Alternatively:

  • Open default 2.63
  • Go into edit mode.
  • Select a face of the Default Cube
  • Click Mesh Tools -> Add: Subdivide.
  • Under Subdivide Change Number of cuts to 10.
  • Under Subdivide Change Fractal to 5.

Result: Fractal subdivide creates an exaggerated morph at a small interval, as opposed to roughening the faces.

Tested on blender-2.63-release-windows64 and blender-2.63-release-windows32 from Blender downloads, Blender version 2.63.0 r45996.

System specs: AMD Phenom II 4X 3.2GHz with 8GB RAM and Radeon HD 5770 1GB on Win7 64.

I do like how smoothness affects this 'new' fractal (it seems to do a better job and not create as bad of a mess as the old method) but I also find a lot of value in the older method as well. I have attached two simple Blend files to illustrate the behavior.%%%

%%%It appears the fractal method was changed, but I don't understand what it's supposed to be doing:
http://projects.blender.org/scm/viewvc.php?view=rev&root=bf-blender&revision=35832

It is displacing along the normal, but the extra complexity in the code makes it seem like it was intended to do something else.%%%

%%%Thanks Brecht. Interval could be higher (anything over 2.5-3.0 fac is kinda pointless, imho), but it's no biggie (more a feature request than anything; like having 0=0 and 3.0 = 1000 in the slider there).

Thanks again! Works really well.%%%
