There is a right click menu in the outliner for Vertex groups. Outliner Data Operation. The items are disfunctional. It`s the same four items that can be found in the Object Data tab in the Vertexgroup Section. Select Deselect, Show and Hide.

Attached a screenshot and an examplefile.%%%

%%%Using "outliner data operation" on vertexgroup suggested it should work, but this is not supported yet. Similar to all the other cases it throws a Report warning now.%%%
