%%%If an object that is associated with one or more materials in a source .blend is added to a target .blend with File->Link, then deleted, then added with File->Link again, the materials associated with the object are no longer shown (in 3D view or rendered), until the target .blend is closed and opened again.

2.63.0 r46461-46487M
Win7 32, Intel integrated graphics

  1. empty file
  2. File->Link, choose a file, choose an object that has materials from that file
  3. right select object just linked in (probably already selected)
  4. X (delete)
  5. File->Link, choose same file, choose same object
  6. object appears in view (and render) without its materials
  7. Save
  8. Open recent (choose current file)
  9. materials reappear in view
