Drag and drop from Outliner window to tabs in Properties window stops working in certain situations #36030

%%%OS: Windows 7 64bit, Linux Debian (Wheezy) 32 and 64 bit, various hardware/graphics card constellations

Blender versions:
2.67b (r57141)
2.68 RC1 (r57908)
latest build (r58029)

Official builds from blender.org, no addons installed.

Problem:

The drag and drop from the Outliner window to fields in tabs in the Properties window stops working at some point, for features such as parenting, or boolean modifiers.

Sometimes it seems to stop working for all objects in the scene, sometimes only for certain objects (and going back to older versions of the scene shows that it was working before).
Sometimes it affects only certain operations (e.g. parenting), sometimes it affects others as well (e.g boolean modifiers).
Sometimes deleting some objects in the scene restores the drag and drop, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it does restore the drag and drop only for some objects and/or some operations.

Example:

Open the attached .blend file. Layer 1 should be active and you should see two objects in the Outliner window, named 'Cube' and 'Cube.001', the latter one being active.

Now try to make 'Cube' a parent of 'Cube.001' by dragging and dropping it from the Outliner window to the 'Parent:' field in the object properties tab below.
It doesn't work. (note that drag&drop parenting inside the Outliner window still works)

To make drag and drop parenting from Outliner window working again for these two objects, you will have to

either

delete one (just one!) object from one of the other layers, so one of the objects from layer 2 (doesn't matter which one), or the object on layer 3, or the camera on layer 10.

or

rename both objects 'Cube' and 'Cube.001' to e.g. 'foo' and 'bar'.
