System Information
Windows 8.1
Ubuntu 12.04

Blender Version
blender 2.69 official
(could not find a working blender version)

Short description of error
When 3d audio is used in the game engine ether using audaspace or the logic bricks 3d audio there is a crackle that seems to be at the same frequency range as the audio on the sound file. So it helps to have a sound high in the top-end of the frequency range to hear it well

Ive tried plenty of different file formats to check ogg, wav, mp3 to name a few it doesn't change at all.

I think ive now checked with total four soundcards to see if it was the problem, makes no change under windows. I then checked under linux using the same computer that runs my windows box and the crackle was gone. (I cant test under mac)

Ive uploaded a zip with a blend file a python script and one wav file to check with.
In the blend suzanne is the listener object she spins around to pan the audio across the speakers left to right to hear the crackle.

Few other checks ive done.

audio buffer length change doesn't help
format 16bit signed or 32bit float makes no change
buffering the audio with audapace makes no change

Ok ive managed to find the bug, it lies with the wrap_oal.dll that comes bundled with blender, The crackle and popping was fixed after I replaced wrap_oal.dll with version 2.2.0.7. (ill attach the wrap_oal version I have) After downloading blender 2.69 official and looking at the bundled wrap_oal.dll properties it has no file version info just zeros, so I cant see if its older or newer than 2.2.0.7.

So a fix would be to update the wrap_oal.dll in the blender source. But as this fixes the problem under windows it may cause problems under osx linux with this wrap_oal version who knows. I cant test under osx linux.wrap_oal.dll

Thomas, what are your thoughts on this? I think VC11+ is no longer using the wrap_oal. Is this something we plan to change for vc9, or just wait until we drop support for vc9?

2.70 will be the last release with vc9.

As this bug is present for quite some time, I would just keep it as is and make sure vc11/12 is not having this issue.

Brita you can close this one I think. As stated by moguri and dingto 2.71 no longer uses wrap_oal due to vc11+. Ive re-tested with attached blend and get the same audio in 2.71 as with my 2.69 build with the fixed wrap_oal.dll. Im guessing linux and mac are built with vc11+ also? so this should be fine for them as well? maybe that should be tested before closing. can only check under windows at the moment.

Linux and mac are not built with visual studio, this looks like a windows only problem.
Closing then ^^

@xonar: mac and linux don't use dlls or vc11, so they can't be affected at all by this, no worries.

as this problem is caused by the outdated wrap_oal.dll I can close this as a duplicate of #38188
