Object turns to gray when Sculpting, in Solid mode #39956

Ubuntu 14.04, nVidia 620.

blender-2.70-d8282da-linux-glibc211-x86_64.tar.bz2. from builder.blender.org.
With 2.7 stable, from site, it works different.

On blender-2.70-d8282da-linux-glibc211-x86_64.tar.bz2 (that already has a sculpt-shapekey-matcap bug fix):
Starting to sculpt the object of this file, when clicking, the object turns to gray. If I go to Edit Mode, its colors appear. So, again, I go to Sculpt, it appear in colors, I click on it, it turns to gray.
On 2.7 stable:
In Sculpt mode, this object always appear in gray.

If I add a MultiRes modifier, the object (in both versions) allways appear in gray.

I can't reproduce this bug in a new scene. But I don't know why this

Some days ago, I found a bug that, in the builder version, was fixed... but, it seems not to be fixed completely.

In 2.7: Open the file in the next comment. Use in Texture Viewport Shading (GLSL) or you can change to Solid AND MatCap. Sculpt it. You will see that the shade is changing, but the shape doesn't. Go to Edit Mode, and the new shape appear. The same happens with MatCap.

In blender-2.70-d8282da-linux-glibc211-x86_64.tar.bz2: Somebody fixed this bug using MatCap... but not in Texture GLSL shade.

Going to Texture - Wire - Solid, the object appears with different shapes.

Well... maybe this is a different bug, isn't it? But it is in relation with the main...

Nahuel Belich told me about "Show diffuse color" option. It shows that this is not a bug... but, despite I don't understand what it really does (on and off), in last build, the object appears always in color when entering in Sculpt mode. If the option is off, when clicking the object, it turns to gray. If it on, the object is always in color.

And it seems that the option works correctly in 2.7 stable (off: always grey, on: always color).

So, is this a bug?

If this is not a bug... then, the bug explained in the last comment REALLY IS (file: 38_sculpt_shapekey_texture-matcap.blend).

Both confirmed. The first file should change color immediately on load and the second should flush the result even on wireframe/textured mode.

Hi, the bug in the first case is that the file is not updated on load.

How this works: If mesh contains mask data we always draw in grey to highlight the mask. Now the confusing part is this: Multires and dyntopo always create a mask layer by default, so only regular sculpting ever shows the material color without show diffuse enabled. In your case, the mesh contained mask data so it should be displaying as grey immediately when loading the file.

IMO we should change this to always grey if show diffuse is off and always material color if show diffuse is on. We will discuss this further with other devs.

This was easy to fix.

Now on to the next one...

@Sergey this is a case of displacement not getting flushed to the shape key.

I have attached a patch, would you say this is OK as a solution?
