Mesh cache modifier cannot use sub-frames stored in .pc2 files? #41118

System Information
Win7

Blender Version
Broken: 2.71

Short description of error
After exporting point cache (with addon), and setting up even 0.1 samples (so, 10 samples per frame), you still cant get smooth animation.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Simulate some cloth (plain->subdivide->cloth->simulate, add ball or something for collision)

  2. Turn on Addon (pc2 import/export)

  3. choose cache from simulation, choose cloth object.

  4. Choose: file->export->pointcache.

  5. Select frame range, and pick for example 0.1 in sampling. Save file.

  6. Duplicate obj that was cloth. Delete simulation from it. Add Mesh Cache Modifier.

  7. Pick exported .pc2 file and load it. If 0.1 was picked in sampling, to have real-time reconstruction you have to choose in time mapping Frame Scale as 10).

By now it should play smoothly.

  1. Change Frame scale to 5. It should be 50% slower.

Animation is choppy. It's a clear Bug.

I've tested it with numerous ways, in blender (different sample settings) and in 3dsMax 2013. Max is reading 0.1 sampling, but still it can't "interpolate" those samples.

In Max, I've exported simulation with same parameters. Imported back to max OR impoter geometry and .pc2 into blender. I could without problem slow down animation by half with no choppyness with 0.5 sampling.

Only solution I've found to this error is to first export simulation to MDD (with another blender addon), and "slowed down animation" export as .pc2 (with samples: 1)

As you can see, MDD exporter doesn't have this problem at all.

Looks like Mesh Cache modifier does not uses stored subframes in .pc2 file?

It's highly unlikely that both programs have problems with .pc2 exported from Blender addon.

And both programs don't have problem with .pc2 exported from Max.

I still assume it's an export issue. MAYBE cloth simulation cache doesn't have sub-frame information stored, and thus, by esporting you can only export samples as 1.

But this is still strange, as MDD does not have this problem.

Actually, you were right, issue was in exporter, fix incoming!
