System Information
Windows 7 64 Bits GTX580+GTX980Ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.78 4bb1e22

Short description of error
Entering RENDERED shading method with Cycles in the viewport erases actually it just unliks the material from the object

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Open the attached file VanishingMaterial.blend
Select the curve object named 'Curve', in the Properties Editor switch to the Materialstab
Now over the 3D view press Shift+Z to enter RENDERED Shade mode.

Everything seems normal, however if you now hover the material name text box in the Properties Editor the name will have turned red.
Nothing apparently happens, the material appears to remain in the object in the viewport, that is until you save and close the file however. If you reopen the file you'll notice the material actually vanished.

Tested again on a fresh clean install of 2.78 without custom addons or keyboard shortcuts.

Only happens with Cycles (not BI), and only with materials assigned to curves objects (not data)… sigh
