Search Box for Bone names not behaving as expected #81262

This is something that was introduced in the 2.8 series.

If I start typing the name of a bone in the bone name of a constraint or in the bone parent name, this is what happens:

search_field.jpg

I type "spine" and the result I get is not ordered in the right priority, as you see, I have a bone called "spine" and the search box doesn't return it as the first choice.

Matters get even worse because many times you would just copy and paste the name of a bone, and if I did that, the search box would select a totally different bone from the one I need.

Here's a proposal that seems to address this issue:

@dr.sybren: do you want to keep this as a TODO task?

If not, then this would be a nice addition, but I would not consider this a bug, sounds like a request.
Since the patch is already in review, I am not sure if we should keep this task open?

I agree that it's not really a bug, but I do think this is an important thing to fix. There is a similar issue in Blender Chat, where you can't search for three-letter usernames, making it impossible to add Ton to any channel. It's by design, but it's super annoying.

@jpbouza-4 Please next bug report include the required fields, like the version of Blender you tested with, and include an example file so that developers can actually reproduce the issue.

Apparently (D7991#222658) this is an already-fixed issue, though. Can you re-test with a recent daily build? If it's not, please attach the aforementioned example blend file and let us know which version you've tested with.

@dr.sybren ok, I'm not sure what to say here. You're right, I was testing 2.83 and 2.90 and it didn't work there, but the behavior is different in master.

So, even though the exact match of what you type in the field is not the first result in the list, when you press enter, in most cases Blender chooses the exact match. Copy pasting also seems to have been fixed.

Therefore I guess this report could be closed as the search field is behaving much better now. I don't know it if's perfect and maybe I find some other hiccup along the line, but it's working much better in master, at least it's not a problem anymore.

I think this is related to this: https://developer.blender.org/D8825, maybe?
