I can't reproduce the issue. Based on your description you have Cycles set as default in your startup file, is that correct? If yes, then please upload your startup.blend from C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.92\config

Edit: On Linux the path should be ~/.config/blender/2.92/config

startup.blend
I use linux, I have no C:\ but I uploaded my 2.92 startup file in which I indeed did set Cycles as startup render engine.

I found a lot of eevee projects where 2.92 loads the file correctly. The error happens for on a project where I have some Geometry nodes, the attached one, set the render engine to eevee, save it, close blender, reopen it in 2.92 for me it is back to cycles, and it seems to go away when you delete the mb lab character.

I cannot reproduce the problem.
Even with the startup file set with Cycles, if I save any project with the engine as Eevee, it will still be loaded as Eevee.

I also tested the attached file.

  • The file was already with the Eevee render engine, so I changed from Eevee to Cycles.
  • Saved it as erreneous file 2.blend.
  • Closed Blender, opened it and loaded the erreneous file 2.blend.
The file was loaded with the Cycles render engine.

Perhaps this is a problem seen only on Linux.

It's the MB Lab add-on doing this:
99e08d0e7d/init.py#L164

You could try reporting a bug to them, but it seems intentional somehow, to set the engine based on their own MB Lab settings.
