System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 461.92

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-02-24 16:25, hash: 02948a2cab
Worked: 2.79

Short description of error
This has existed since the 2.8. Zooming in slows down significantly at some point, where pushing to zoom into maximum does not produce any move the view closer in the viewport. It doesn't seem to be related to the object selection. The only way to reset is to View selected

Reading the tasks here: https://developer.blender.org/T67579 it seems like it may be related to zooming in the middle of the viewport as opposed to zooming to the object

When it is not possible to zoom in anymore with the space mouse, the scroll wheel on the regular mouse continues to zoom fine. Increasing the pan sensitivity produces the same behaviour

For information, here are my NDOF settings:
image.png

I've experimented with all kinds of combinations, including increasing the pan level to 12. At some point, the same behaviour occurs. Also, if I switch to Free, then a similar behaviour occurs with pan and zoom

In 2.79, zooming in is constant and the zoom out, however with free/turntable with 2 for sensitivity.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
This seems to occur in large scenes where it may still be needed to zoom closely into a small object

  • open new default scene
  • duplicate the cube and scale it quite high
  • move around the scene by going really far away from the cube, and then start to try to get close back to the cube. The zoom[pan] get slower and slower, and at some point it's not possible to zoom in any closer to go inside the cube and then out the other side. The with the regular moue scroll wheel it is possible to continue to zoom.

Suggestions

  • there should be a zoom sensitivity option, as zoom is different than pan and orbit
  • orbit should orbit around the selection, maybe with an option to toggle on/off

I just wanted to chime in and say I'm having the exact same issue (3dconnexion Space Navigator). The NDOF navigation works great, unless you get too close to the point of orbit (~less than 2M), then it slows down like you are stuck in the mud. The closer you get the more it slows down the sensitivity.

I discovered a very similar issue happens with the normal mouse controls if you use ctrl + middle click and drag up to zoom in very close. If you get too close then you cannot pan or zoom the view any more. You're stuck until using View Selected to reset the view. It seems to be something to do with the way Blender scales the movement controls based on your distance to the orbit center.

It's unfortunate because the Space Navigator does work quite well at a distance but frustrating because its easy to get "stuck in the mud".

Hi, thanks for the report.
We also have a similar report on tracker (which is not actually related to space mouse): #93273 (Zoom stops at certain level and won't go further)
Can you confirm if that's the case for you?
Otherwise I need to ask someone to test with space mouse.

No activity for more than a week. As per the tracker policy we assume the issue is gone and can be closed.

Thanks again for the report. If the problem persists please open a new report with the required information.

I have the same issue here, I'm trying to move the camera using a 3DConnexion space wireless mouse.
I created a dome with HDRI image and inside there's a table and my object.
Trying move around the object works well, but after it, the zoom get slower and slower, and at some point it's not possible to zoom in any more.
The issue seems less dramatic while orbiting around the object (simualting a drone camera, but I can't always fake a drone...)

TONS of tutorials I saw tells you to switch Auto Perspective and Depth, but this doesn't solve the issue.
I'd simply love to be able to use my 3D mouse to fly in my scene, recording keyframes to create dramatic shots.

Developer, help me!
:-)

ciao!
Marco

Changed preferences -> input -> NDOF switched to "FREE". Now it doesn’t stop approaching the object, although not 100% smooth it seems to have the right behaviour. I’ll test it in the next project.
Thanks
