Opening New 2D Animation File or New Grease Pencil Blank causes Black Window #94358

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19044-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.14830 Core Profile Context 21.10.30.01 27.20.21030.1005

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-12-02 18:35, hash: f1cca30557
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
*Trying to open a new file as 2D Animation causes the window to be covered in black. The solution I found is to draw a dot or line with the grease pencil tool and the screen goes back to normal. The same happens when adding a new grease pencil blank in a general new file. As with a 2D Animation file, drawing with the grease pencil tool turns the window back to normal. Stroke and Monkey Grease Pencil do not experience the same issue.

Apologies if the words I used to describe it are not correct technically, I'm new to this program and reporting bugs, I hope the photos can help! I'm unsure if the blender file will show the issue on another computer, but I saved it with the window in black.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
*Open Blender, Select 2D Animation under New File, this causes the window to be covered in black. Drawing with the grease pencil fixes it.
*Open Blender, Select General under New File, this causes the same issue. Same solution as above, drawing with grease pencil makes the screen normal again.

Hi, thanks for the report. Attached file opens fine here. Also cannot reproduce from scratch with provided steps (tested on current master and 3.0.00)
Can you please check again with factory settings: {nav File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings}

Thank you for the suggestion, I did try again with factory settings. Unfortunately, I got the same results. As before, the issue goes away when I draw a line with the grease pencil tool. I understand, thank you for trying out the file on your part. I opened up the attached file again on my computer to see if it was still black and it still is for me.

Can you please tell us what GPU you have? It isn’t showing up in the system-info. The following link can help you to locate this information.

Thank you for the link, it is AMD Radeon Graphics. I also included a screenshot of the information from Radeon Software as I'm not sure if it helps elaborate further.amd_gpu.PNG

On macOS with AMD, when I switch to "2D Animation", I have the same black viewport for a second. I think while the shader is being compiled. The same thing if I switch to "Material Preview" and enable "Scene World". Once per Blender restart.

Hmm, okay, maybe it's an AMD GPU thing? In my case though, the black viewport never goes away on its own. It will only turn normal if I draw with the grease pencil tool. Also, if I delete what I drew with the grease pencil tool, the black returns once I leave the viewport and come back to it.

At least I've been able to still use Blender for what I intended as I simply leave a stray grease pencil dot or line outside the camera's view and that allows the viewport to appear normal the rest of the time. It's an odd fix, but it's worked for me so far at least.

I cannot reproduce the problem.
Try the latest daily build and run blender_debug-gpu.cmd that is included in the download.
Then load your file to reproduce the issue.
After Blender closes, the logs will be in a text file which can be attached here.
Most likely it will contain more information about the error.

Okay thank you, I did as you said and got two text files. One is the debug output, the other is system info. Not sure if the system info one is helpful, so I will attach it as well just in case.

Thanks for the file.
The issue is difficult to identify as the code does not report any errors.
It is not clear whether the error is in Blender or in the graphics driver.
While this is a real issue, it is only happening to a few people so far. And to troubleshoot it developers needs to have direct access to hardware.
So not much we can do here apart from suggesting checking on a newer drivers.

I understand, that's too bad the issue does not show in the log, but thank you for the help.
I see, I can understand it must be difficult to help with it as most others don't have the same issue.
However, thanks! It did make me think perhaps there was an update for the drivers, and there was. I installed them, but the issue still remains.

Nevertheless, the workaround I've been using of just drawing a random line to get the black to disappear has allowed me to use Blender without trouble. Not a complete solution, but I can at least use the program as intended. I appreciate the suggestions and help though. Thank you!

I just noticed that your VRAM is 512 MB, which is under the 2 GB that Blender requires.

I’ll close this report per the tracker’s policy.

Glad that you have a workaround.

I didn't realize that, thank you! That definitely gives me more insight on why.

Understood, I appreciate the help!

Thanks.
