Constant crash on Shader compilation or upon entering Material preview #95751

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: (Full display device) : Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 Intel 4.3.0 - Build 20.19.15.4642
(Render-only display device) : NVIDIA GeForce 840M - Build 30.0.15.1165

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.0.1, branch: master, commit date: 2022-01-25 17:19, hash: dc2d180181
version: 3.0
version: 2.7
Worked: -

Short description of error
File loads fine in Solid mode. Every time I go into Material preview either of the following happens:

  • Blender freezes (not responding) before termination
  • Blender successfully goes into Material mode, compiles Shaders up to 51% or 85% before termination
  • Blender terminates immediately upon entering Material mode

Important notes:

  • The crash only started happening after updating NVIDIA GeForce driver to the latest version (511.65).
  • Rolling back to previous driver versions did not fix the issue. (It did a clean install first time so I couldn't roll back from Device Manager and had to do it manually)
  • The crash seems to happen specifically with two projects that are quite texture-hefty, and use imported models from the Sketchfab addon.
  • This is reported by a very recent and novice Blender user.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Since the error happens on certain files, I'm unable to provide steps to reproduce it unless I attach the .blend files themselves (quite large).
Basically: Open file > go into Material or Rendered mode.

Attached is the crash report for both files (attempt3 loaded with Material preview already enabled)
attempt2.crash.txt
attempt3.crash.txt

Please let me know if I need to provide anything else, as I said, I'm a complete novice.

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the report. Crash occurred in igdusc64.dll which I think is a part of intel graphics driver.
Can you update your intel graphics driver: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/3.2/troubleshooting/gpu/windows/intel.html
Unsure if it's useful but try to switch your GPU as a workaround:

  • {nav Windows Settings > Display > Graphics Settings > Desktop App > Browse}
  • Choose Blender.exe then {nav Options > NVIDIA GPU}

Hi Pratik, thanks for your reply.

I tried switching to NVIDIA GPU as you suggested, unfortunately, it didn't work and Blender crashed again the same way. Here's the new crash report.

As for updating my intel graphics driver, this one is a bit tricky, since my graphics device is quite dated and I'm using a laptop. I will have to follow up with my OEM regarding the safest approach to this. It might take a while but will report back here as soon as I'm set.

Thanks again.

Hi, recently attached log file says- crash occurred in nvoglv64.dll which is related to NVIDIA graphics driver.

I'm unable to provide steps to reproduce it unless I attach the .blend files themselves (quite large).

As you said crash occurred with heave scene, did you manage to reproduce with less complex file?
Normally .blend files can be simplified by removing most objects and disabling settings, until the problem reveals itself more clearly.
Consider using less complex geometry, simpler shaders and smaller textures.

If there are many steps to reproduce the problem, please attach a .blend file saved right before the bug occurs, so only a few steps are needed to trigger the bug.
(Reports with more complex scenes are usually not considered as bug reports)

Hi, I don't think we can do much without being able to reproduce the problem
As report says, "crash occurs with complex files" so try simplifying it by removing most objects, textures, etc. until the problem reveals itself more clearly.
Unfortunately the scenario described is too time consuming for us to track down, we require the bug reporter to narrow down the problem.
If problem persists please open a new report with required information. Thanks for the report!
