System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux and Windows 10
Graphics card: Intel UHD 620 and NVIDIA GTX 1060 Super

Blender Version
Broken: 0781c22cee, 2.80
Worked:

Short description of error

Screenshot from 2022-03-12 02-43-32.png

Enabling AO while having a model with custom normals will in most cases exhibit visible faces.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

  1. Create a Sussane
  2. Add Subsurf. modifier and Normal Edit with locking polygon normals (lock next to Max Angle)
  3. Enable Rendered/LookDev mode with AO enabled
  4. Notice visible faces on the ears

If I'm not mistaken this is the same issue as reported in #89575 (Regression: Ambient Occlusion causes shading artifacts)
Will close this as duplicate. Thanks for the report :)

Don't hesitate to comment if there is misunderstanding. I'll reopen the report in that case.

I've taken a look at the other issue and compared them. It is in my opinion a different problem for various reasons.

  1. Faces are visible regardless whether Alpha Blend is enabled (although different severities)
  2. Faces are visible regardless whether Bent Normals are enabled
  3. Issue is still prelevant (although looks a bit different) on 2.80

Not sure if internally it points towards the same issue though, but on surface level it appears to be a different bug.
