Summary

In object mode, statistics info shows verts/faces counters for selected object AND for total scene. You don't need to go into edit mode to check if the geometry is heavy or lightweight in its polycount.

For empty scene it looks like:
Verts: 0/0 | Faces: 0/0 | Tris: 0 | ...

If there are some objects, non selected it`ll be like:
Verts: 0/549 | Faces: 0/580 | Tris: 1,048 | ...

If there`s some selected object it`ll be like:
Verts: 42/549 | Faces: 80/580 | Tris: 1,048 | ...

P.S. Sorry, I`m doing it for the very first time!

Seems reasonable as a way to quickly tell where detail is in a scene when selecting geometry.

Although we should make sure this works properly with instancing.

Notice how the vertex numbers change when selecting either of the two instances:

You`re right... it doesnt work properly with instanced geometry only real geometry shows correct vertex/faces counts... Sad...
